Hi Rob sorry about that. Any chance you could just put this in a support ticket? I am working through the items now and once in the support system (menu->support) I candela with it a lot easier. I need to know if you’re on windows or Mac and may ask for some info but we’ll get it fixed for sure!
You wrote what I was going to post. But this problem happened in my case on both Grimm MU2 and PMG streamer. I believe this may be an issue for PMG users as well. I am using WIFI for PMG and wired connection for MU2, but I do not think it matters with the connection types.
I have a similar issue as Rob and Donald, but cannot get any music to play. I download Maestro to my Windows 11 PC to check it out. I am using a Grimm MU2 (with the latest firmware) and I cannot play music to the MU2 using Maestro. Roon plays without any issues.
I accessed the MU2 via Chrome and changed Roon to UPnP. The MU2 shows that it is streaming via UPnP instead of Roon. While Maestro “sees” the MU2 (but not always after restarting Maestro – in which case I have to manually input the MU2’s IP address), it will not play music to it. When I click on Devices in Maestro, select the MU2 and try the “Find Your Device’s Best Format”, I received the following error message:
“Could not play to MU2: This device supports volume control only. It does not advertise a UPnP media renderer, so Maestro cannot send audio to i”
This suggests that Maestro is not seeing the Grimm as a usable UPnP renderer and is not sending music to it as a result.
I’ve tried rebooting the MU2 and closing / opening the Maestro app and that hasn’t resolved the issue. It doesn’t matter if the music file is a local one (i.e., on the hard drive in my MU2) or a Qobuz file.
On the bright side, Maestro was able to see and catalogue all of my albums on the internal hard drive in the MU2.
I’ve submitted a support ticket through the app, but thought I would post here in case other Grimm users are experiencing a similar issue.
I installed Maestro on my roon server MacMini. The interface is really sharp and navigating seemed intuitive. I uninstalled it after struggling to get good sound through the connected Matrix 3 SPDIFx - I assume having a UPnP compatible streamer is a requirement.
It was a fun experiment though.
Downloaded Maestro yesterday to see if the sound quality is better than Roon on an MU2. I have done a couple dozen A/B tests, streaming from Qobuz (95% of my listening), I prefer Maestro over Roon.
Maestro is working reasonably well with the MU2 streaming from Qobuz up to 24/192. Before I spent time trying to get everything working, I wanted to make sure there is enough of a SQ improvement to make it worth the effort, I believe there is.
In my case Maestro does not see my music folders/files on the MU2 internal drive.so I have not tested any DSD tracks - and when testing Devise functionality between Maestro and MU2 DSD always fails.
Hello Paul & Folks:
I just upgraded my Dell PC to version 10.4.5.- The latest. My Windows 11 and its l latest updates is a little different. I did the following:
- Windows Security
- App & Browser Control
- Reputation Based Protection
- Reputsation Based Protection Settings
- Check Apps & Files
- Turn to “Off”
Manually in Maestro Click Check for updates
Click Download
You get a screen saying to effect app could harmful
Click “Keep”
run Executable And it upgrades!
Now I have figure out my Mac air upgrade. It won’t upgrade last time I checked.
PS I’ve been so involved in this upgrade problem that I did not pay much attention to SQ. But to my ears and I could be wrong, the Mac version sounds better than Windows version.
Oh boy.
This now?
Are you going over UPnP or USB to a DAC / streamer?
Tony:
My system includes Maestro to Airlens to PMG DAC via Dragon I2S to PMG Pre to BHK600’s to FR-30’s.
Re my casual comment on SQ, I have to make sure both versions are playing at same volumes using same reference track. We’ll see.
UPnP stands for Universal Plug and Play. I don’t believe such a thing exists. On the Audiophile Style forum for the Grimm MU1 and MU2 we have been discussing what to do now that Roon is unreliable. Grimm did a major upgrade a few months ago that allows UPnP access. The person who writes JPlay is active in the thread. Many tried to use JPlay with the MU2 and things weren’t working well. Eelco explained that they are a small company, they don’t have time to help every customer who has a UPnP issue. There are too many variables, which streaming software one chooses, what network gear are they using, what style tinfoil hat they trust. If memory serves me Eelco recommended using a solution offered from the good people who make dBpoweramp. I am going to try it just because they do great work.
At any rate, there are different ways to do a UPnP endpoint. Some work, some don’t. Eelco believes the people who write the streamer software should be the ones to work through UPnP problems.
In my case, I have a BACCH-SP adio. There is a button on the Advanced page to turn on the UPnP receiver. I have hit that button 25 times. Then I have Maestro look at the network. It lists the BACCH-SP but there is no green dot. This means it actually is not connectable. Sadly, the only device in my home that has the green dot is my wife’s Samsung television. I won’t be streaming to it any time soon. I desperately want Maestro to play through my BACCH-SP. I have texted Edgar asking about UPnP. I don’t think he is going to respond any time soon. Sigh.
So I guess in my situation, I will have to rely on PMG to solve this issue.
My current Maestro setup has it installed on my main Windows desktop computer. USB out from it to a Matrix V3, and then Toslink from the Matrix to the Babyface Pro in my Bacch4Mac setup. I am pointing Maestro at the music stored on the Windows machine itself. I didn’t want to point to my NAS just yet. Soon though. Right now the daily updates for Maestro are keeping me on my toes.
One of the reason I fell hard in love with Roon is for the longest time, it just worked. No computer knowledge required. Login to Qobuz and Tidal within Roon, point it at your music storage and it just worked. I can’t wait for Maestro to be there. I have no idea what is involved or how brutal this task is on our Paul. I remember years ago he said he was going to write something that would leave Roon in the dust. I couldn’t comprehend that being possible. With Maestro I am really starting to believe. Just tell me which tinfoil hat to buy to make it all work.
Ya! I am so happ too to see Maestro is 100% committed to sound quality (compared to Roon which lost that focus completely) and also music discovery will be a highly enjoyable area. Paul even thought about the challenge of solving DRC/DSP with no need to have another device and outsource that into the cloud too.
So, lots of great moments ahead. And I am all in on Maestro to further support what’s needed.
A trick I found to get Maestro synced back up with the MU2 when Maestro thinks it’s playing but MU2 doesn’t play is to skip a track forward on Maestro and it usually starts playing, then I skip back to play the track I wanted. I’ve streamed Qobuz for several hours now on the MU2 under Maestro control, the SQ improvement is intoxicating..
While trying to connect to UPnP devices (no luck) I thought I’d try pointing Maestro at my NAS. It only took a minute and it was easy. Whew.
By the way Paul, I REALLY WANT YOU TO SUCCEED with this! I hope to happily subscribe forever, or at least two years.
Yes, I am observing the same here. I don’t think this is a placebo effect, as I didn’t expect or anticipated this to happen. Couldn’t help noticing it though and it took me by surprise. Maybe it took a little while for my ears to get used to the sound, or there might be a yet undiscovered technical reason. Or both. ![]()
Once Maestro works out all the bugs this will be a great app. Even from my noisy PC Window controller the SQ sounded great. I imagine the iPads version could be even better. I have not compared it to Roon yet since I only listened to it all day after installation. I figured it may need a day to settle. But I need to do more important thing later.![]()
@Paul just for clarification, the iOS/Android will be remotes only correct? Not the server.
Maestro, like the JPlay app, doesn’t act as a man-in-the-middle for music streaming. It just tells the DAC where to fetch the stream you want, then the DAC connects to the source and streams directly from there. Your noisy PC doesn’t really enter into the SQ equation.
On the other hand, the Roon core device receives the stream you’ve specified and repackages it in the proprietary RAAT protocol to rebroadcast it to your Roon-ready DAC. I don’t know what the Roon endpoints might do to futz with the original stream, and I’m not a Roon user so I can’t compare by listening.

No. I’m pretty sure they will be the full app not just a remote. Maestro is not a server based program.
Thanks guys for all you’re doing. It really helps a lot! Big developments on the way this week but most of them are in fixes for devices and formats, searching local libraries, all that stuff.
One thing I would love is if you have a specific problem or suggestion, in addition to the forums (which I love) could you fill out a support ticket? I built a really cool support system that helps me list bugs and features and address them in an organized fashion instead of 100 emails. ![]()
Much appreciated but also keep the forums going! We’re going to make magic.
Glad to hear stability gets improved. You may understand that even though this is titled “beta software” it’s to some extent the first impression for users that counts. So core features and a stable audio playback should be a must to get a good momentum for more users, especially as in that stage many are comparing Roon, JPlay etc. vs Maestro and are wondering if they are willing to try it out or even to switch.
So making this “entry” as seamless as possible is an essential part in getting this project going. And regarding the registration process for the trial, seems there is still a credit card needed? Which for many is a show-stopper in the current stage. Hopefully this can be sorted out quickly too.
