You can run the balanced XLR outs and single-ended RCAs simultaneously. The only downside is this will unbalance the XLRs. Thus, you loose common mode noise rejection compared to using the XLRs alone. For most, this is no issue. Depending on the load, the levels may also be lower but this does not harm anything; the DS is designed to happily drive just about any load without changing frequency response.

As I recall, Paul indicates there is no issue if the subwoofer load is above 30k ohms or so. [Edit: I think he meant the XLR would not unbalance as the power needed to drive the sub would be miniscule.]

Short version: Try it and see if it works for you.

I personally prefer running a speaker level input to the sub from the amplifier as this helps to better integrate the sub into the system’s sound. But this may not be an option for you or not appealing for other reasons.

Thanks @pmc7027 ! As you said, the only way to find out is to try out. Unfortunately my sub (SVS SB16 Ultra) does not do high pass crossover / connection. But I do use REW and miniDSP to DSP the sub.

If this does not work well, that’s OK, the DS can stay with my headphones as a DAC.

@thyname Re: Tidal

I have a Synology NAS and installed Minimserver and Bubbleupnp Server. Bubbleup server is only used for OpenHome emulation. Minimserver does all of the server work. This allows me to use the very excellent Lumin App which in addition to controlling the playlist from my NAS also allows Tidal integration. This app also allows Qobuz integration.

What I like about OpenHome emulation is that the iPad control point does not actually “push” the music. That means the iPad can be turned off.

Some folks use the same setup, but instead use Linn Kazoo. I tried both and much prefer Lumin App.

On the Android side, you can use Bubbleupnp App. I tried that as well, but once I tried Lumin App, I never looked back but there you do not need the Bubbleup server running as it is a straight DLNA compatible, i.e., not OpenHome compatible. Your android device must be on to play thru a playlist.

Mconnect is a poor excuse of a control point app. It astounds me that any one would recommend it. I won’t even use it for the full Tidal unfold that it delivers. It’s absolutely awful.

BTW, I am a new DS owner like yourself. I’ve had mine for about 3 weeks now.

Does this mean you can set up a playlist, click play, turn off the tablet, and the entire playlist will play?

@thyname How do I know? I spent days at a friends house comparing his DirectStream (running Huron) and Holo Spring KTE (with SU-1) and my Yggdrasil. All three sounded quite different. Yggdrasil and the DirectStream sounded best doing no upsampling. The Holo Spring was mediocre in upsampling mode but sounded great in NOS mode using HQplayer to upsample.

In in the end, we both preferred the DirectStream. I sold my Yggdrasil and my friend sold the Holo Spring. Red Cloud is a big step up in overall sound quality. We are both VERY happy with our choices!

NOS DACs have a different sound to them. The DirectStream is on the opposite end of the spectrum in how it does things and it has a very different sound to it. I am not knocking how the Holo Spring sounds. I am pointing out that is different. Specifically, the DirectStream has more realistic sound stage and less high frequency roll off.

Yes, I still have a Mimby that I use in my desktop nearfield setup. So?

Yes. The whole point of OpenHome emulation is that you set up zones throughout the home. Thus, you can turn off one control and if you have another system in another part of the house, you can pick up its control and play to that zone, add to the original playlist, put down that control, go back to the original control point and the new additions will be there as well.

I only use it because it allowed me more flexibility in the choice of control point app. I’ve been using it for 4 years. My previous renderer (sonore) and DAC (W4S) worked with it and the DS / BridgeII works with it.

Good for you @speed-racer . Three male friends in a house testing DACs for days. Sounds like a lot of fun!

And at three times the price of Holo and Yggy, the DS better win

Will do. I will refrain from reacting to posts that for some reason I don’t like or find hilarious.

Back to DS: I reinstalled the firmware from the website again, just to upgrade to latest 0207 Rev that they did not include on SD card with my DS. The artwork is still broken. With Roon and with the MControlHD app I just installed (thanks to those who brought it up!). I will have to learn to live without it. Bummer! Such a waste of a beautiful large(ish) color touch screen OSD.

For the SQ: using it in my headphones setup (Headamp GS-X mkII Amp and Focal Utopia). I had it playing non stop in loop since yesterday until this evening when I sat down and listen for 2.5 hours so far. The sound is very soft, warm and very pleasant. Very musical and not tiring. Detail is still there. Not much oomph, not much “sparkle” so to speak, but not lacking much resolution. Just not “in your face”. Bass is somewhat subdued. I am very optimistic this will only get better with time. Analog junkies should dig this.

Definitely would like to explore settings more with Roon, and possibly apply some DSP.

To be clear, the DS firmware does not really have anything to do with artwork as that is handled by the Bridge and its firmware and associated software. Artwork display has always been somewhat hit or miss. In my case that is true with JRMC as well as Roon. It’s not something that is important to me but I understand that others feel differently.

@thyname Hi, I have a similar setup. Roon ROCK with a direct ethernet connection to the Bridge II (that rather to avoid another ethernet switch). Artwork is working quite stable here. Sometimes when it didn’t work (anymore) re-plugging the ethernet cable has helped. I will try that again _next time_. As long as you have artwork you can use the remote control for pause/play and skip. Not sure if that makes any sense.

Btw, for artwork/the ‘Now playing’ screen I am using a Lenovo Yoga 3 8 tablet (Windows) and the Roon extension [Web Controller](https://community.roonlabs.com/t/roon-extension-roon-web-controller-v1-2-0/28412). The problem is you can not install the extensions on ROCK yet (afaik) so I have installed it on the Yoga. (It is probably better to install the [Extension Manager](https://community.roonlabs.com/t/roon-extension-manager-v0-5-1-now-on-github/26632). I was using the [Windows Installer](https://community.roonlabs.com/t/howto-install-extensions-on-windows-in-three-easy-steps/29783))

![roon_artwork.jpg](http://www.psaudio.com/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-image-uploads/holzohr/2018/01/roon_artwork.jpg "roon\_artwork.jpg")The left tablet is the Yoga with Chrome browser, the right one my old iPad mini with Safari browser.

About the OSD of the DS DAC, I wonder if it is still planned to give it the look of the Memory Player’s OSD.(?)

About SQ, I find Roon superb. Sometimes more sometimes less ![smiley-music005_gif](http://www.psaudio.com/wp-content/forum-smileys/smiley-music005.gif "smiley-music005\_gif") I still have installed the MinimServer and Bubble UPnP Server on my Synology NAS as rodrigaj but I can not use it at the moment because only Roon can “see” the Bridge II. I don’t miss it. I still like to use LMS, my longtime favorite streaming plattform. When you know apps as iPeng or OrangeSqueeze then apps as mconnectControl are rather hard to bear.

@speed-racer I was reading the complete Freya thread on [headfi.org](http://headfi.org). Very special thanks to your contributions over there! Now I am waiting for mine. Also interesting that a Holo Spring and a Yggdrasil were replaced by a DS DAC. I had the Holo on my radar as second DAC but decided that a preamp is more important for now.

Thanks @holzohr for chiming in!

I have been experimenting with the Artwork via Roon. I found that leaving the SD card inside the DS helps with Artwork. I initially had it removed after loading (as the online instructions for RedCloud suggested), but then I put it back in and Artwork is showing up is much more consistent.

Maybe something to do with the cache.

It just takes a bit to show up, maybe about 8-10 seconds after the track starts (and each track on same album). Not a big deal, I can handle it.

Finally, I tried the mControl HD on my iPad Pro w/ Tidal Hi-Fi. So far I hear no difference in SQ on it vs. Roon.

</div>

The SD card must be inserted for artwork to function. As you suggest, the cache is stored on the card. The instruction to remove the card does not take that into account. Some people erase the card before putting it back (or use a different blank card) or put the firmware files into a folder to be sure they do not try to load again every time the DS is turned off and on at the back panel.

Updates:

1 - I bought a much higher capacity SD card and inserted it blank. I now get the Artwork showing via Roon almost 100% of the time.

2 - SQ: after about 125 hours of burn in, listening critically today, this is definitely a keeper!

thanks all for the help and putting up with my inpatience
