BHK Pre Amp Problem

I was listening to 'phones, turned volume down, unplugged the 'phones, slowly turned volume up and no sound from speakers. Noticed “FAULT” was flashing in window on right side front of unit. I tried everything I could think of, to no avail. Of course this is not mentioned in the owners manual.

  What to do now?

No, and I’ve never heard of this problem. Did you try a power down reboot? Otherwise, please call us right away and our customer service people will get you figured out quickly.

Jeremy called and gave me a RMA & SASE for Fed-X return shipping so they can either fix or replace it.

GREAT coustomer service at PSA!!!

I just started having my own problems. The preamp started normally this evening but when I tried to change the volume with the remote it didn’t move. I rebooted the preamp and the 45 second warm-up countdown took four or five times that long. When it eventually came on, it had the same volume problem. If I spin the physical volume knob it sometimes moves a click or so per revolution (or two or three revolutions). I unplugged the unit for 15 minutes and rebooted. Same thing. 45 second countdown took over five minutes. Volume knob mostly unresponsive and remote totally unresponsive, including input changes (inputs can be changed from front panel). It is not in Home Theater mode. My unit is one of the early ones signed by Bascom.

Any ideas?

Did you check the batteries in the remote?

I used two remotes, the one that came with the preamp and my usual universal remote. Both work with other equipment, including my DS. In any event a dead remote would not explain the other behaviors.

I did recently get a new LG TV and have noticed the PS Audio units sometimes react to the TV remote, such as the displays flashing on when dimmed. Seems unlikely the two are related but stranger things have happened.

When you say you disconnected the unit, did you remove the power cord from the unit ? If not, you can try and see if it helps.

In the past my AVR receiver has gone wonky with the volume control and a hard reset (tiny recessed push button and you use a pin) would restore it back. I don’t know an easy way to reset the BHK but someone from PSA should be able to guide you.

I’ve had a similar problem(s) with my BHK preamp… Both times it was the small board/microprocessor that the stepper motor is attached to… First fault: a failed display - burnt-out component. ( Dave P sent me the parts and I installed the board and display and all was well for a few months ) Second fault: unresponsive volume ! ( Dealer sent me the new microprocessor and the musical bliss resumed ) …

Thanks Dirk. That’s very helpful. I put in a PSA support ticket last night. If that’s it I assume I would get a firmware update in the process.

Dev, yes I unplugged the unit for 15 minutes last night to no effect. I unplugged it again before I went to bed so it will be unplugged for about 20 hours by the time I get home tonight.

@Paul or @DaveP any thoughts? Would a chip switch likely solve the problem with the BHK Pre not responding to remotes and the volume knob requiring multiple turns to get it to move at all (plus a nearly six-minute warm-up time)? Naturally this had to happen just before a long weekend. Having done a lot of PSA upgrades and other DIY projects I’m pretty sure I could handle it myself (i say that with confidence like I knew what was really involved, which I don’t).

Hi Stevem2,

Jeremy and I are aware of your issue and he should be contacting you shortly to give you a micro replacement kit. If you have any questions feel free to ask Jeremy to route your call to my office.

Excellent! Thanks so much Darren (and Jeremy). I take it you agree with Dirk’s diagnosis. 4_gif

Hi Steven,

We’re pretty confident that the replacement microprocessor will address the issue. I am sending one to your address on file at no charge to you. It will arrive with a set of instructions, wrist strap and removal tool as well as the Microchip. If you have questions or would like to speak to us directly please reach out to service@psaudio.com or call (720) 406-8946 ext 2.

Thanks,

Once again you’ve proved PSA provides the best customer service in the business. Thanks! 77_gif77_gif77_gif

Received and installed the replacement chip and all seems well. Installation was very straightforward. Glad I remembered to check the tube hours before installing the new chip since it was reset in the process (I expected that would be the case, along with needing to rename my inputs).

Thanks again to PSA for the outstanding customer support. 77_gifmusic-078_gifsmiley-music005_gif

Excellent!
