BHK Preamp - noise

I have a lot of buzz on my preamp … I do not know how to get it away. :sob:

also without any sources connected to the preamp?

I just tried … I disconnected the DS and my NuWave Phono Converter … then it’s gone

ok, I had something similar when interconnecting devices that have a 2 PIN and 3 PIN power cables. (if 2 PIN ground is missing).
I solved this by connecting all devices to a common ground.
Just buy a copper cable and then either crimp it with ring connectors or solder it to the shield of a RCA connector. It then needs to connect to the ground of your wall socket. In Germany, we have Schuko plugs, so there it is quite easy to connect the metal rings by using a ring crimp connector.

Thanks bro… I’m trying …

I had trouble with this as well. I actually send my preamp in to get tested, they told me there was nothing wrong with it. I have Tekton DIs which are 99db efficient. I definitely hear hiss from my listening position regardless of the tube, regardless of the tube voltage (although worse with 6V tubes). Amp is BHK 250. DAC is DSD Jr.

@Somppsa has DIs as well with a BHK 250 and DSD Sr. He says there is no hiss from his rig which is why I was so confused for a while. But, if Ps audio tested it and said it was fine, then I guess thats the flaw of a tube pre, low baseline hiss.

I got Whirlwind -10db attenuators a while back and they have been phenomenal. Becuase everyone was saying that Rothwell Attenuators were really good too, I just got a pair. Currently the Whirlwinds are miles better. But not fair comparison given the break in time (less than 24 hours on Rothwells vs 1000s of hours on the whirlwinds).

No hiss here unless I put my head very close to tweeter, say half a meter or so. When I play music I really cant hear background hiss or noise with my Tektons. I listen about 3 meters from speakers and if you ask my wifey,I have lost my hearing because it´s always so loud
Some tubes were noisier than others and there is also possibility that your BHK250 tubes are causing some of the hiss you mention. When I swap my Gamut amps instead of BHK250 noise floor or hiss is quieter but still ,not a problem with either one. Without preamp going straight from DSD to BHK250…well now there is some serious hiss

Hopefully those attenuators work well for you.

May we should go by db of hiss since we can’t trust our relative degree of hearing loss

So… was the excessive hiss or white noise attributed to a bad tube (s)? or is a noticeable amount expected due to the tubes on the BHK pre?
