And I thought that rumbling tonight in Boulder was the thunderstorms. Can you turn it down over there in North Boulder? 😉

Those look amazing. Is this kind of design being considered for the Sprout speakers ?

Who manufactures these drivers?

Damn! Very cool! What is the projected sensitivity for the AN3?

Wow, insane stuff! Damn, it now definitely won’t fit in my living room! ☹

What are the cross over points per 4 drivers? How do you ensure smooth transition, specially from mid-bass coupler to ribbon midrange which has a different sound characteristic?

I think they are designed in house and custom made just for this project

Got to see the grill design that keeps one from tickling the fabric. Being a line array fan I am just imagining the possibilities.

The driver excursion is impressive, I grant them that.

That is exactly correct. We have multiple vendors that can make these for us and we’re in the process of evaluating each to see who has the best quality control, etc. They’re not easy builds. The lead wires are all carefully sewn into the custom spiders and
the tolerances are quite exact. Let’s just say that so far the house that built these also builds some really expensive drivers you know all about and might be surprised, but I am under NDA by the company.

Thanks, Brodric and if I may toot our horn a little, what’s really cool is not just the 2.25” excursion but the fact that excursion is linear and low distortion with room to spare on either side. The trick was to match the driver with the amp so the maximum
the amp can produce will always be within the linear range of the driver.

Paul, the AN-3 looks very interesting and impressive. I have been interested in a pair, however I am now wondering how to power these multiple 700 watt speaker amplifiers without having to refit the audio room with bigger AC cable and multiple P20s. It’s time for my reality check. I suppose I’ll have to wait for the smaller AN versions… Yet, I am still planning to visit PS Audio in October and listen to the AN-3 and the big IRS speakers! Can’t wait!

</div>

But keep in mind that they are class D amps. Though capable of 700w, class D amps are biased so differently that they hardly ever need to actually pull that much current from the power source.

They’re basically the M700s I assume with some modifications for servo feedback? You guys using a secondary coil instead of accelerometer?

I thought using a second voicecoil for feedback was/is inferior to accelerometer designs…?

Very clever, akin to carefully driving a vacuum tube within its linear range.

</div>

No, I am not a fan of the coil for measuring motional feedback. If we’re going to use an actual device it’ll be an accelerometer. However, Chris, Bob, Darren and I are conspiring to try something really new using DSP modeling as a servo.

Paul,
Most exciting news, thank you.
I may have missed it, what material is used in making the 12" cone?

I love the idea of the midbass coupler. I was thinking that driving Maggie LRS’s or .7’s down to 300hz, crossing to a 6 1/2" coupler 300hz to 70hz, crossing to a 12" sub 70hz and lower(all powered) would be a cool DIY mod.
Of course…I’m not really sure how to do that…

So you guys are basically doing a predictive servo? That is, you have all the driver variables like mass, suspension stiffness at various points in travel, magnet flux at various voicecoil positions, etc. so you know when to “apply the breaks” based on frequency and amplitude. Amirite? Amirite?
