It seems that you may be asking more of your P3 than
is available feature wise with it…

It may be that you are hesitant to move up…but seriously think
of PS Audio’s trade up program for a P12…it has all that you
are looking for that the P3 does not…

Best wishes

Well, when set to HC, it is a conditioner. Inherent to all conditioners is an increased output impedance. In some systems, the benefit of the cleaner power outweighs the higher output impedance. Depending on the amp though, they don’t like the higher resistance and it can take away some of the dynamics. Darren did a good job of finding a nice sweet spot of having a good conditioner in it and limiting the current as little as possible.

Thanks again, Jamesh.

Today I have been comparing the sound from my wall outlet to sound from the HC outlet on my P3. So far, the sound through the HC outlet is noticably clearer, with greater definition. Based on what you just shared, I will compare some dynamic recordings and see if my amplifier (Hegel H390) has its dynamics noticeably affected by the HC outlet on my P3. If anyone reading this has done this before with your amplifier, I’d love to hear about your results.

Yes I have George\_P, at first running my Parasound A21 ClassA/AB
250w/ch stereo amp through my P12…then direct to wall…
results were that the A21 went back to being plugged into my P12.

More recently now with a P15 and the much bigger brother of
the Parasound A21 the JC5 also Class A/AB I have tried both
ways …JC5 remains powered by P15…big difference to my
ears…

Your Hagel H390 may require more power than your P3’s hc
power conditioning filter can dynamically offer…
Your H390 is a very nice piece…

Best wishes in your adventures

Thanks, David.

When you had the Parasound plugged into the P12, was it on a regenerated outlet or a HC outlet?

Hey George\_P

On the P12 the hc outlet is a regenerated power outlet with
all the benefits of power regeneration and not a power
conditioner as on the P3…Therein is a big difference.

Somehow I think your Hegel is hungrier for power than it
is available for it via P3…

Best wishes

Sounds like you didn’t use the Filtered HC option that I am using. I am hoping to hear from some people who have done this comparison.

If can’t get my Hegel amp to work well with what I have now, I plan to return it for a refund. I have until 2/14 (three more weeks) to decide. Spending any more money is not an option.

I think you misunderstand this part…from the P12 on up
the HC outlet is a regenerated outlet and not a power line
conditioner as in the P3…Yes I do use the HC outlet for my
power amp…

David, I understand completely.
You are using your amp on a regenerated outlet. I am not.
Again, I am hoping to hear from some people who have their amp connected to the non-regenerated, Filtered HC outlet on their PP.
Hope that clears up the confusion.

I happen to be adding a P12 to my system that already had a P3 on the front end (as I’ve posted elsewhere here). Ultimately I cannot reasonably make room for both P’s in my rack/living room without upsetting the other members of the family, so I have to choose one.

I had certain intentions but wound up listening in this order:

- P3 front end gear / no P12 (amp direct to wall)
- P3 front end gear / P12 feeding a class A, 25W amp
- P3 front end gear / no P12 (amp direct to wall)
- P12 powering everything, preamp and amp on P12 HC outlet

The first point is my usual setup. Then, the best was #2, P3/P12 combined, but it seemed to lack slightly in the midrange. There was a very appealing sparkle to the high frequencies and the apparent reverb of a recording, the space around instruments and drums. A sort of energy or live space, even. Dynamics are strong. Again, maybe more mids would make things feel more like sound I am used to hearing.

BTW, I use an iPhone app called Decibel X to compare my impressions against the frequency spectrum graph.

Back to my usual setup: P3 only (all outlets regenerated). Soundstage and size of recording space seems compressed, diminished, rounded off in the corners where the previous seemed open and airy. Thinking to myself, “can I live with this? um, well, don’t want to but no way I’m going to get P3 and P12 to fit…” So…

P12 feeding all. A compromise to the good side. Not as airy as the two units, but airy enough. At least for now, I’m staying with it. Originally I admit the conventional wisdom of plugging amp directly to wall (which I’ve heard/read _ **a lot** _ over the years) seemed to be the route to go and I guess I should try it. But, having heard how good my amp can be for what I value in sound…well, I think this is the balance.

The mids are there, the airiness is mostly there, great dynamics.

Hope this helps, @George_P

To be completely fair, I don’t know because I have not tried to discern one way or another. I would need to A/B test and given than once you run it, you can’t go back, well, you can’t A/B test.

My system is very resolving which I assume because I can easily hear the A/B difference between footers under my speakers (spikes vs. rubber feet vs. Iso-Acoustics; the latter wins by a mile but the other two emphasize what they emphasize), and I can easily hear the effect on the midrange with footers under my preamp vs stock factory feet.

So that said, I don’t feel like I’m hearing a strong A/B before/after CleanWave. I will “try” more in the future, but note that that is pure expectation bias at play. If it works, great. If not, no harm since it’s already paid for. I have the XLO disc and the Ayre disc w/ sonic sweeps/degaussing tracks. I figure they can’t hurt and that is because electricity and magnetism are weird.

On that note, know what really really really ruined my system? Sending our drapes out to be professionally cleaned for two weeks! OMG, so so so terrible…

Hi James,
Now you got me thinking! On the P15, are HC outlets regenerated like the P20? Also, are they linked to CW and MW?

As far as HC goes on the P12, 15, and 20, there is no difference with regard to CW and MW. Only the P3 is different in this way.

Since it’s a new year, I wanted to bump this thread for any new members, to get their impressions/experience with the Cleanwave function on their Power Regenerators.

I just got a new amplifier (Yamaha A-S3200) and I have been using the Cleanwave function more than ever. It seems to work incredibly well with my new amplifier, as long as I use it for one minute minimum.

I used to ride it a a lot. The more you address noise in your system with good power cables, grounds, ICs, shielding and RF absorber tweak all are lowering noise floor, the less impactful the usage seems. I may do it two or three times a week now. Never hear a change anymore. Still need to reboot DAC every now and then. Clean wave doesn’t address that.

That’s good news, Vmax. Must be nice to just play and enjoy.

Have you (or anyone else) noticed that new equipment seems to need a lot more of Cleanwave than gear you’ve had for 6 months or longer?

Not really. Burn in is torture to my ears. I got new monoblocks and new mk2 the past 4 months. They punished me and tried not to listen to much because you second guess decision. . The clean wave did not help either. Your best friend is non revealing cables for breaking in. But if cables are new there is little choice. . You usually get a good boost first few hours then its best to run them when not listening. Reconnecting old air tube cables or unused ones often resets burn in clock.

But some folks don’t notice burn in. They are lucky.

Man, I hear ya 100%.

I despise burn in. And I live in a one room apartment, so nowhere to go when the music is playing.

And I completely agree, burn in can be so up and down that I have suffered considerable anxiety thinking that I bought a lemon, or bought something that doesn’t work in my system.

Good idea to use non revealing cables. I have an old Radio Shack IC I should use the next time I burn something in.

I absolutely envy those who don’t notice burn in. I usually hear glare, instabilty in tonality, restriction in dynamics and just overall harshness during burn in.

I’ve heard that if a component is more expensive, the parts inside take longer to burn in. Have you heard that?
