DAC vs Pre?

I moved in October and I am just now getting the gear reconnected.

I finally tried running with the DAC and excluding the preamp but the Dynamics and soundstage seemed thin Added the McCormack TLC mid stream and the listening experience seems to have improved. Why might that be?

See first snapshot in systems… SO happy to have it powered up and filling the room with music after six months.
