My DS arrived today.

1. There is no SD card in the package. I believe this will mean no album art on the screen, yes? I can reuse the one from my PWD, after copying off and then deleting the old PWD firmware. For those who are not upgrading from a PWD, this is a significant omission.

2. I moved my Bridge from the PWD to the DS. I want to rename the Bridge (it just said “PerfectWave DAC [unit ID]”) and I never changed it. I hit the Edit button, erased the old name and entered the one I want, then hit Submit. The new name flashed for a second then it reverted to the old one. Is there a trick to this? Do I need to hit that red “Reset Bridge” button or something? Which leads me to . . .

3. I looked at the manual for the Bridge on the website. It gives installation instructions but nothing about how to configure the network settings, rename the Bridge, etc. This should be fixed.

4. There were no batteries for the remote. I mention this only because every electronic product I have bought, including those that sell for 10% or less of the DS’s price, always has included batteries. I mean, earlier this summer I bought an oscillating tower fan for $45, and it has a remote (!) and included batteries.

Now I will go fix the network settings on the Bridge and hopefully get some music!

Just FYI, I received my upgrade kit about a week ago, it did have the SD card, and batteries were included. I’m sure PS Audio will take care of you.

Ah, so there is supposed to be an SD card (I thought so). I don’t need taking care of, since I can reuse the card from my PWD and I have some AAA batteries in the house. I mentioned these things so that Paul and Co. would be aware that there seem to be some quality control issues as the DS’s are packaged. The SD card is of particular concern, because 2GB cards are no longer something one can buy at the local office supply store (and of course one shouldn’t have to). I personally could care less about the batteries. But someone who came home late from work, found his DS delivered, and wanted to try it out might not be thrilled about having to run at late at night for batteries. It’s one of those things that gives the impression of lack of attention, which suggests lack of quality (and we know that’s not true of the DS!).

I do hope someone has suggestions about renaming the Bridge. I tried to rename it “Network Bridge” and its name is now “N”; for some reason the one letter took and others didn’t. I have tried multiple times, sometimes using only uppercase, names without spaces, etc.

Double FYI, the SD card (in my case) didn’t work. I ended up formatting it, downloading the latest and that worked just great. So honestly getting it from the factory (in my case) didn’t help all that much. I just wanted to point out that the kit was complete when I received it. Keep us posted after you get it set up!

The problem you might have is the SD card has firmware that must be installed after you upgrade. That firmware is different than what is on the Downloads site. Please contact us for a copy of the SD card so you can get this working right. I apologize there was not card, that’s a bummer.

It seems that complete DS units are being shipped with no sd card. This could be addressed as well.

+1. Mine was one of the first 100 out and arrived without an SD card.

I received my DS (not a kit) Saturday with batteries, no SD card.

Not a big issue for me as I have a few old camera cards, but a new user who hasn’t read these forums extensively would get frustrated really quickly with the fat 16 formatting requirements.

Hopefully you can find out why its not on the QC checklist, or why its being skipped without any notification.

Thanks, guys. Perhaps I wasn’t 100% clear – I have a complete DS (not a kit). When I mentioned reusing the card from my PWD, I’m referring to the unit I am going to trade in for the discounted DS price. It will go back to Boulder cardless. Paul, I was OK because the first thing I did was check the firmware number and it is the latest (6115 or whatever that is), so I didn’t have to do any firmware upgrades. I see album art with the reused SD card so looks like we’re good.

I did get it hooked up and playing last night. The Bridge accepted the static IP address I’d been using, and the eLyric controller does work; so I’m happy on that score. Even with only an hour or two on it, it’s clear that the DS surpasses the PWD. With PCM files I get an analog-like smoothness, especially noticeable with strings, more details, better timbre, and an overall more “organic” presentation. ![4_gif](http://www.psaudio.com/wp-content/forum-smileys/4.gif "4\_gif") Can’t wait to try native DSD files (tonight) and hear what it sounds like with more hours!

Ok, here’s the deal. There’s no reason for us to ship DS units with SD cards. So we don’t.

If you buy a Bridge, it should come with an SD card. I checked, and it does.

The only fly in the ointment is new DS shipped with a Bridge installed. There we left out the SD card. I just had that added to the BOM, and we’ll fix that small gap.

So very few go out pre-installed with bridges.

Hope that makes sense.

I got a pair of gloves with my DS - I would have liked an SD card instead.

Just messing with you Paul - I thought the gloves were a nice touch though. I’ll totally wear (one) while moonwalking to the music.

Yeah, the gloves are useful for changing tubes. I also noticed that it’s an _organic_ cotton bag.

Seriously: I thought all PWDs and DSs required an SD card to display album art. Now I guess that’s only needed if one uses the Bridge (which I always have; never tried without). Can someone confirm, just so I won’t make this mistake again?

Even more seriously: I just played the last movement of Beethoven’s 6th symphony. I have never heard the instruments in an orchestra so clearly delineated before. ![inlove_gif](http://www.psaudio.com/wp-content/forum-smileys/inlove.gif "inlove\_gif")

How does one update the firmware on the DS without a 2g SD card? [ assuming no Bridge installed}

Wait, bag? You mean the little pillow case with my new favorite company logo on it? 🙂

Are you being serious?

Since an SD card didn’t come with my DS, I just grabbed a 16GB card out of my adventure camera, formatted it on my laptop (which happens to have an SD reader built in - otherwise I’d use my USB3 external memory card reader), then download and extract the firmware to the card. Pop it in and power cycle. Done and done.

You got lucky. There have been multiple threads about difficulties in upgrading the PWD firmware. Some, like you, have been able to use various cards, with or without reformatting. Others have had major problems and had to use 2GB cards, sometimes even sent from Boulder. I notice that the DS manual no longer specifies that the card must be 2GB, as the PWD manual did. I hope that this means the DS is less fussy about upgrading via SD cards.
