When I mulled it over, this is what prompted the BHK question. I’m not sure when the MKII will be released but when it is, I’m more likely to find a better deal on the DSD. In the meantime, the BHK could fit nicely on the rack. Paul also mentioned additional releases from the speaker line this year? Decisions, decisions.
The audiophile conundrum.
Buy the DS Sr. and immediately open your BHK Pre. and DS MK II savings accounts.
(You can’t really make a bad choice here.)
You speak the words of a prophet.
I predict the cost of a new DSD MK II will cost more then a well cared for DSD Sr. and BHK PRE combined.
I have no reason to doubt that, hence the baby steps. The whole conversation calls to mind a favorite quote. "Ladies and gentlemen of the City Council, I’m just a caveman… Your world frightens and confuses me. - Phil Hartman, The Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer
You can pick up a mint used DS dac and a mint used BHK Pre for a bit over $6k total. You’ll be ecstatic. I promise!
I’ve been going back and forth about this for a few weeks now. One of my workmates is looking to make his next move up the audio chain. Perhaps several jumps.
My experience with the DS including my amazing satisfaction is based on the fact that Ted kept making it better and better with each upgrade. Would I be as happy if I purchased a used $3250 DS knowing that it’s never going to get another firmware update? Sure I could do the Edcor upgrade, use external power for the analog card, and add some RF blocking. But that’s it.
It’s amazing for $3250, but my personal joy of owning it has been the upgrades.
The upgrades have been great! For sure. But I’m behind the curve with my speakers and streaming device. I’ve been invited by Jeff to audition Joseph audio speakers, but I’m waiting for the current rendition of Covid to ebb a bit. And of course ………still waiting for Airlens release.
Personally I’d act now on a used DSD, and then consider a DSD Mk 2 12-15 month after the initial release, especially after the first Firm Ware change that addresses user comments associated with sonic improvement opportunities.
Good points.
