Firmware update for PMG 512 DAC

Thanks for pointing me to the Input Power option for turning the Streamer Off then On. I liked it better where it used to be. I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be in both places. It now shows up in Roon again. I also found the Ground Lift setting, but I did not see it when I looked last time.

I still don’t know what Linear meant under DSD rate. I checked, and the manual has not been updated yet to reflect the settings changes in the latest firmware update.

How did you find the ground lift settings Donald.

What is your preferred pre-emphasis setting in the audio sub-menu for transports? Off, on or auto?

It is under Audio, the bottom two are “ground lift” and “input power”.

Thanks found it, tricky. What are you choosing for pre-emphasis? Off, on or auto?

I left it off since I do not think I have any pre-emphasis CDs.

Same here I think!. I don’t even know what that is, I’ll just leave it off:rofl:

Pre-emphasis is a 1980s CD noise-reduction technique where high frequencies are boosted during mastering to reduce quantization noise from early 14-bit converters. It acts as a “treble boost” meant to be corrected (de-emphasized) by the CD player. Without proper decoding, these CDs sound harsh, bright, or overly sharp.

I would like to have the ability to enter my own string in the input name field

I would just like to add my thanks to PS Audio support. I had issues updating the dac and received an email from Delia after a message from Paul….i couldn’t ask for better customer support. Well done….

I just updated the streamer firmware from 3.0.11 to 3.0.12 and very glad I did. I have been pulling out my hair trying to get my streamer to play wav files since I updated to 3.0.11 (wrongly thinking the Jriver server settings were at fault). This latest FW fixes it.

Everything seems to be working properly now except DSD256 which stutters badly over dlna (it works over usb and I2S). I wrote this in case anyone else is having similar issues.

PSA please give us release notes, and a list of known/outstanding issues would be a great help too. My blood pressure can’t take much more of this sort of thing.

Used to be similar problems with firmware updates on the DS Mk2, where an update may well change user settings and many owners could not remember all their settings they had changed from default.

Many owners posted about this problem and asked if any future firmware update could remember user settings before applying the update then restore user settings as part of the update.

Sounds like this could be another request to the firmware coders.

I have had the same with the DSD 256. A massive Jumanji style hunt through my network with AI trying to analyze fix, bypass various bits got me nowhere and I can stream DSD 265 to my Antipodes k50 with no issues over exactly the same network - so it seems to be related to the PMG 512 rather than the network - though my PC network card is not the best but has been tuned as best it can for audio

Yes I also suspect the PMG streamer is involved. I can stream from one jriver (pc1) to JRiver pc2 and play to the dac via usb and I2S with no dropouts. So that suggests the network is not at fault. But change deliver via dlna to the streamer (from either pc) and dsd256 stutters very badly. All through the same network and devices. Possibly a lingering glitch with dlna and the streamer.

I powered off the Streamer and then back on so that Roon could find the streamer again. I started a playlist on repeat and in less than a day Roon was no longer seeing the streamer. I had to power off the Steamer and back on (AGAIN) for Roon to see the Streamer again. I am using a wired internet connection to the DAC with a fixed IP address that I set up in my Router. I am on the .12 version of the Streamer firmware and the latest DAC firmware.

Interestingly Roon and Maestro could not find PMG Streamer yesterday also. I powered off and on it was still missing. It turned out the streamer turned itself off for some unknown reason (I played SACD all day before but that should not have caused it).

For the first time I played with Ground Lift, and I randomly turned on (or was it off with green?) the bottom three including XLR, USB and Coax2 I think. I did not like the SQ much. So everything is off (grey). But does the new setting needs time to break in? Hmm, I might try it later again.

I only use HDMI 1 input and ended up with that one ground lifted and the others grounded. This is better than all inputs ground lifted (of course YMMV). The difference is small but definite. I would expect different results with multiple sources connected, but no predictions.
