First music of the day

Another cold morning. I got to sleep in late–to nearly 7 a.m.–and then my post-music world began very early and I didn’t get any listening in til now.

This one again as halfway through listening to it as my last disc of the day yesterday I got an important family phone call and I was really enjoying the first half.

Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Shirley Scott “Smokin’” cd

From this box set

COLD again. Got to sleep late though, nice!

Starting the day off with a new arrival:

A truly wackadoodle album.

Great album cover!
Now to see if it has been released on vinyl.

Not familiar with the cover, is that the Winter & Winter release?
I do have it and it is a great listen!

Rick, my copy is on the Evidence label. I think it was originally released in Japan.

It’s going to be barely in the twenties today. . . no hope that the ice that plagues us will diminish. Sigh.

I have forgotten about Overdrive, a fine Dave Holland Big Band effor. Now to track down my copy.

That is a great cover

Mentioned several times earlier this week, so broke out my copy for a listen. This is a fine MJQ set.

Starting off the quiet and still morning with this one again. It sounds so good!

Bob Dylan “The Shadow Kingdom” Columbia cd

Followed by
Dave Holland “Not for Nothin’” ECM cd

What a quintet this was!

Dave Holland Not for Nothin’ is an excellent album, and with Dave’s ability to attract some of the finest talent as well. Steve Coleman and Chris Potter are two examples that immediately come to mind.

Mid-morning listen to Russ Johnson Trio Live at the Hungry Brain. Max Johnson and Tim Daisy complete the trio. This one is a bit freer than what I am accustomed to from Russ, and upon first listen I prefer his more grounded post bop style. Good to know he is open to experimentation.

Starting off a cold day with a repeat listening to this fine cd:

Ted Nash “Still Evolved” Palmetto cd

Man it sounds good, especially with the continuing seasoning of my new upgrade.

Hoping for a better day. . . yesterday sucked. A crisis brewing with one of my brothers, and on top of that I fell on the ice twice (my steeply graded driveway has a sheet of ice more than an inch and a half thick on it, I fell once carrying in six 40 lb bags of softener salt into the root cellar from the car, and once going down to the mailbox–did not get hurt, just . . . disappointed).

On to

Ted Nash and Still Evolved “in the Loop” Palmetto cd

The same excellent group except Wynton Marsalis is not on board for this one.

Beautiful, thoughtful playing.
Nice way to wake up; coffee, pure Class A, NYT Spelling Bee, maybe waffles with berries this morning.
