First music of the day

A cool still morning. Going to be a beautiful day!

Starting off with

Lauren Henderson “Sombras” Brontosaurus Music cd

This is the first I’ve heard Ms Henderson, bought because Joel Ross is part of the supporting quartet. Wow, what a graceful phrasing and voice that draws one in. Such a pity her other albums are so expensive to collect!

And now

Donna Fuller (with Pete Rugolo and his Orchestra) “My Foolish Heart” Liberty TOCJ Japan Super Bit Jazz Classic lp facsimile cd

From 1957. Nice sounding disc!

I should open my cd version soon!

A late start today. On another board they are discussing this title and I decided to pop a copy of the SHM-SACD in. Not my favorite Larry Young recording perhaps, but what a band–Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson and Elvin Jones joining Larry Young.

Larry Young “Unity” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD

Now on to

Herbie Hancock “Empyrean Isles” Blue Note Japan 85th Annniversary SHM-SACD

A warm, clear, dry morning. A great way to start the day is this nicely-recorded gently swinging session.

“Paul Meyers Quartet featuring Frank Wess with special guest Andy Bey” Miles High cd

Guitarist Paul Meyers, Frank Wess on tenor saxophone and flute, bassist Martin Wind, drummer Tony Jefferson–Andy Bey on “Lazy Afternoon”

I met Paul a couple times and loved the way he played. But I never looked into his recordings.
Thanks for this. Ordering today.

You’ll dig it. The Andy Bey track really moved me today. . . he was a master. . . sadly passed recently.

Starting off a beautiful morning with a disc I have not spun in a while. I need to get more Weber Iago. Such an interesting writer and pianist.

Weber Iago “Os Filhos Do Vento: Children of the Wind” Adventure Music cd

This is more classical than jazz . . . pastoral, evoking vivid texture.

Followed by some hard swinging. Bobby Shew Quintet with Carl Fontana “Heavy Weights” MAMA cd

Bass – Bob Magnusson
Drums – Joe LaBarbera
Piano – George Cables
Trombone – Carl Fontana
Trumpet – Bobby Shew

Recorded September 20 & 21, 1995.

Finally made it up to my seasonal home this year, much later than usual. Life has thrown several curve balls at me delaying my annual transition north. Fired up the stereo yesterday evening, and it sounded rather off. Allowed it to play through the night hoping it’d wake-up and come into its own. It has as demonstrated by the wonderfully engaging work by Peter Evans - with his quartet Being & Becoming Ars Memoria. Being & Becoming is Peter Evans, Joel Ross, Nick Jozwiak, and Michael Shekwoaga Ode. Reminds me slightly of the works of Rob Mazurek.

A nice morning. I get to crank the system a little bit. . . and it sounds great. I re-listened to part of that Peter Evans again. I sure wish I could mix out a lot of the “effects” on that. . . not how I’d like to hear it. Then on to:

Aaron Parks “Little Big III” Blue Note cd

Both Being & Becoming albums are good, effects and all. I do wonder hiw it would sound sans effects🤔
