First music of the day

I like this one. . . but I’m not crazy about her singing, she’s not on my list of the “greats.” Sound is great though, Cohen does a great job with the group.

Up early. -3 degrees and saw a party of deer walk through the side lot, always a thrill to see life in the moonlight.

Starting off a quiet listening session with Kenny Burrell “Ellington is Forever, Vol. 1” on Fantasy/OJC cd. Yes, Ellington IS forever.

On to “Little Johnny C”, Johnny Coles Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

“etc.” is Leo Wright, who was not under contract with Blue Note.

COLD! I’m getting used to it.

Now spinnning Bobby Hutcherson “In the Vanguard” Landmark cd. The sound is a bit drab but great playing!

Bobby Hutcherson – vibraphone, marimba
Kenny Barron - piano
Buster Williams – bass
Al Foster – drums

Now

Grant Green “Feelin’ the Spirit” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD.

I just love this album, have four different issues I’ve kept, they all sound very good. Herbie Hancock really shines on this session.

Even accordion can be enjoyable when it’s brilliantly played. I found this while searching for Philip Catherine. Excellent album.

Aldo Romano, not bad at all! also!

COLD. I’m getting used to it, especially when it’s not snowing. Lots of snow, over a foot, everywhere I haven’t shoveled, and on all the trees. BEAUtiFUL.

This is the first morning with the new Dynagrid Jr. I’m listening to John Coltrane “Crescent” Impulse Japan SHM-SACD, an amazing mastering of this classic material.

On to

Joel Ross “Gospel Music” Blue Note cd

Second listen to this new release.

Cold! The city of Chardon is reporting 102" of snow received this winter. We live in the hills above Chardon and usually get a little more. This is a heavy winter indeed. More snow predicted today, perhaps not a lot.

I’m getting in on the fun among jazz fans and listening to the final disc in the Tower Records Edition SACD set of Miles Davis “Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel.” Music I’ve enjoyed for decades now.

My wife fell asleep early and I turned in but woke up and had trouble going back to sleep so I’m doing some listening.

I pulled out a Sun Ra reissue from last decade I had little memory of and it’s an interesting date. No bass player, which creates an interesing “space” in the music, sort of wish Ronnie Boykns was present. A radio broadcast from the Philadelpphia period which is one of the final Ra periods I am really interested in. Lots of Ra piano and good Gilmore and Allen playing.

Sun Ra “Of Abstract Dreams” Strut cd

On to another Sun Ra, “When Angles Speak of Love” Myth Science cd

This material is from 1963 and rather “out there” but an interesting sonic experience. Suits the hour and my mood. This is very 1963 exploratory jazz, sounds like a time capsule to me.

Sun Ra: piano, Clavioline, gong
Walter Miller: trumpet
Marshall Allen: oboe, alto sax, percussion
Danny Davis: alto sax
John Gilmore: tenor sax, percussion
Pat Patrick: baritone sax, percussion
Robert Cummings: bass clarinet
Ronnie Boykins: bass
Clifford Jarvis: drums
Tommy “Bugs” Hunter: drums (?), percussion, tape reverb, engineer
Ensemble: vocals

Yesterday evening we got about an inch of snow but the temperature in the 20s felt good! We took a nice walk before a late dinner. Colder now, 11 but should make it up to 20 this afternoon. I’ll take it.

Starting off with a cd I haven’t heard for some time, which is making me realize again what a fantatic aitist Connie Kay was.Took me a while to realize his always appropriate accompaniment.

“Milt Jackson” Prestige/OJC cd

On to

“Eddie Condon Town Hall Concerts, Volume 8” Jazzology 2 cd set, disc 1

Any concert that starts off with an Ernie Caceres solo on baritone is a great one! The first show has Ernie, Pee Wee, Max and Mr. T! And then Mr. Bechet!

The cold continues. BRR. I’m getting used to it but a temperature in the ‘thirties would be welcome.

My listening to this yesterday got interrupted so I’m re-playing this first disc.

An early start to the day, and looking out on the new snow. Decided to play this new arrival. I have this music in several formats, the Mosaic LP version, a newer (and crisper) cd version, and this earlier cd version that sounds a lot like a straight unfutzed with LP transfer.

The music is truly “timeless” if there ever were timeless jazz. Lester Young leading great outfits and the joy and skill shine forth. It’s been too longe since I’ve listened to these tracks!

“Giants of the Tenor Sax: Lester “Prez” Young & Friends” Commodore cd

The awesome Kansas City Six and Kansas City Five recordings.

Recorded on September 27, 1938 in New York
or March 18, 1938 in New York

On to some of my favorite current cats on this excellent cd–drummer Johnathan Blake, alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and vibraphonist Joel Ross.
