There’s big change in my household now–we adopted from a neighbor a sweet, mellow dachshund-corgi mix male dog who is getting used to us and our house. He’s sweet and loving and a happy dog. Getting our first listening session in . . . starting off with Bill Evans “Top of the Gate” disc 1
Adventures with a new dog. . . .Tobi woke up when I did but he doesn’t want to go out yet, and he doesn’t want to listen to music with me. So I’m letting him keep Lucinda company as she sleeps and he’ll let me know when he wants to go out.
Starting a warm morning off with Miles Davis “Bag’s Groove” Prestige/Analog Productions SACD. Timeless music!
“The Complete Woody Herman Decca, Mars And MGM Sessions (1943-1954)” Mosaic Records 7 cd set, disc 1
Over the decades I slowly became a big Woody Herman fan, even as a vocalist, and this disc features a few great Ben Webster solos as a bonus. A very varied and interesting box set.
Marveling at how wonderful the system sounds this morning. Started off with side 2 of “Ellington Jazz Party in Stereo” Columbia LP. . . the engineering on this is just superb, and with Mr. Five by Five and Dizzy the music just soars, and all that percussion!
Another soggy morning after a stormy night. I’m enjoying the quiet for a bit and starting off with a bit of “no music,” as Tobi the new dog sleeps on the bed. We discovered he is very afraid of storms, he had a rough night.
Now it’s time for music.
Randy Becker “In the Idiom” Denon cd
An interesting ablum sounding not unlike a 'sixties Blue Note session to my ears. Grest recording by James Farber in October 1986.
Joe Henderson here, with David Kikowski, Ron Carter and Al Foster.
More rain overnight. . . a bit cooler and damp this mornning. Tobi, our new dog, is not thrilled.
I only managed to hear about half of this yesterday as I was called away and never got back to the stereo (I have not been getting enough listening time lately!) So I’m re-spinning this and really enjoying it.
Started the morning off aggravated on another board by an electrical engineer who keeps pontificating that “digital is nothing more than ones and zeros” and “cabling doesn’t really matter” etc. and belittling audiophiles. Sigh. It’s like a political tribe arguing wtih another, futile.
Spent a few hours getting some things done before upcoming storms arrive and am now settling down for a little listening. Starting off with Duke Ellington “Copenhagen 1964” on Storyville cd. Ellington always lifts and separates me from my frustraton.
The eery quiet of Sunday morning! I’m breaking the silence with Wayne Shorter “The All Seeing Eye” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD
Shorter with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, alto saxophonist James Spaulding, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Joe Chambers. Alan Shorter plays fluegelhorn on the final track, “Mephistopheles.”
The cold is back, with a dusting of snow. Springtime in NE Ohio! Not unusual I’m afraid. I have some traveling to do today so it’s good it’s just a little snow.
“The Complete Woody Herman Decca, Mars And MGM Sessions (1943-1954)” Mosaic Records 7 cd set, disc IV
I’m continuing on a revisit of this interesting set of Herman music.Billy Eckstine on this disc!
A late start today. . . yesterday I got a package in from Resonance Records with their latest releases. I’m starting off with the Mal Waldron, “Stardust & Starlight–Live at the Jazz Showcase” cd.
A cool morning of what should prove to be another sunny day here in the mid-seventies. Like yesterday I predict Tobi the new dog will want to walk, walk, walk. . . . And I have tasks around the house to perform. Should tire myself out over the course of the day.
Starting off a listen with the new Ahmad Jamal 2 cd release from Resonance Records, “At the Jazz Showcase: Live in Chicago” which is a great way to start the day. From 1976 with John Heard and Frank Grant.
Another warm day. I heard an owl nearby as I woke up, a sound I always enjoy hearing–they’ve moved closer to us again, the varmint population must have grown back. Tobi our new dog heard him as well and we went outside briefly.
I’m starting the day off with Benny Goodman “Different Version Vols 1 & 2 – 40 Alternate Takes Of Recordings 1939 to 1940” Phontastic 2 cd set, disc 1. Got this from dustygroove.com really inexpensive, and the sound is excellent. This band was so very “on” at this time.
