The difference in sound between 3.06/08/10 was subtle, I preferred 08, but I’d be happy with any. The main determiner on which version to load - for me - would come down to the functional end result. And as we’ve read, different DMP loaded with the same software behave differently for different people.
I have an overall impression of 3.x locked away in memory. I could comfortably compare that impression against any other disc spinner I might try in the same system today, despite not having the two comparative pieces spinning side-by-side. I’m not comparing a forensic examination of the sound, more so the whole impression.
I’ve gone 2 better than that…MSB Select DAC, fully optioned up to $120K, + Select Transport, fully optioned up to $42K. Actually, it didn’t really impress me that much. I wouldn’t buy it even if it was half that price, or a 1/4 that price for that matter.
Interesting that you say that about MSB. One of my local dealers sells both PSA and MSB. His primary demo system for speakers uses PSA DSD and not MSB. You need to request the MSB’s.
Are you going to go for the PX1 ? You know it has to be better than the P1. What I find strange is you waver on the P1X because it costs an extra 11K, but you have spent more on supports for your speakers, and you also spend/waste more money than that on wire & plugs…
I’m leaning towards P1. The supports and wires etc get used all of the time so the high price can be justified, whereas spinning discs is just a part-time activity. The P1 will be plenty good enough for part-time use.
You make me laugh…… with part time use. “P1 will be plenty good enough for part-time use”. You make sound as if the Esoteric P1is bargain-basement deal of the day… You are some man.!
The price I’ve been offered is too good to refuse. I expect to be able to flip P1 for a small profit in 2 months when the P1X is available. So the aiming point is P1X. Any profit on short-term use of P1 just makes good sense to me.
EMM and Playback Designs are also trying to get their products into my home and they’ve also sharpened their pencils on price nicely. But I do like Esoteric and am inclined to stay with them.
Makes perfect sense. I would do the same. I, too, would stick with Esoteric. I heard the Esoteric range of equipment in London and it was mightily impressive both physically and sonically. Is the purchase of the P1 imminent… You will have to post a picture when you introduce/include the P1 with the rest of the audio family.
Yeah, for sure…nice eye candy. The new Mpod footers for my M3 speakers are on the way, and hopefully a disc spinner not far behind. But before I make a final decision I have an Accuphase DP-950 SACD transport coming to try for a while. See if I can get in a mood for disc spinning. The DMP didn’t really get me in the mood for physical media. Hopefully something more functionally robust will.
