I have had this project sitting on the shelf for the past six months and finally got the impetus to work on it before the end of the summer.

Back in the day, my deceased Uncle Jay gave me this early 1960’s HH Scott integrated amp (bottom shelf) and its companion FM tuner (next shelf up) for my 13th birthday. As a kid becoming a teenager in the 1970s, having your own stereo system in your bedroom was a really big deal! I was so grateful to him for that gift back then.

Fast forward to this year, I was using this system in my home office to listen to the radio while I worked. Unfortunately, several months ago the tuner started experiencing what is called a “breathing volume problem.” This happens when the volume rises and falls for no apparent reason while the music is playing, and it’s a common problem in old tube-based stereo systems.

I reached out to several local repair shops, and none of them got back to me. Forced to my own devices and not willing to let this very special gift go, I decided to try to fix it myself. After all, it wasn’t working properly anyway.

I searched through all kinds of YouTube videos, watched numerous hours of electronics repair videos, and decided I was ready. After taking inventory of all the capacitors and tubes that needed replacement, I ordered about $200.00 in parts. The tubes were the most expensive part of the repair.

It took about four hours to carefully remove the old capacitors and solder in the new ones, making sure each one was properly connected. Once that was done, I replaced all the old tubes with new ones (about 5 minutes), then put the tuner back in its place in the rack.

I am so happy that it is working properly once again. Hopefully it will last another 66 years before it needs any further work.

Working again. Hopefully for another 66 years.
