I have an LP remastered by Gus Skinas himself in DSD. It’s an old Rolling Stones album. It is one of the best recordings I own. Hope PS Audio brings more of that, its fantastic.
For recordings I have in both digital and vinyl format, I find myself consistently favoring vinyl. I really enjoy high res digital, don’t get me wrong. But vinyl when done right, meaning when played on a top notch TT, has depth and dimension down pat. Digital has yet to match it, never mind beat it.
I have a CD Players, iMac music server and Stellar Gain Cell DAC in my home office.
In our living room an old Thorens TD 105 with no name cartridge and the phono MM input on my Yamaha AV receiver, a blu-ray/CD player and Apple TV streaming device.
In my car I use an old iPod, that I sync with the iMac as portable music server.
And when flying I have the collection on my iPhone.
So I listen to vinyl, CD’s and a iTunes library with lossy AAC purchased songs from iTunes (highest bitrate), lossless ALAC ripped CD’s and recently DSD 128.
The only album I have double is Pink Floyd the wall, got it 35 years ago as second hand vinyl album. For a while my turntable was stowed away, so I bought the remastered but lossy album from iTunes. I prefer to listen to the old Pink Floyd LP’s.
The PS Audio Gain Cell DAC connected directly to my iMac music server clearly reveals the better quality of lossless files and plays DSD 128 music I purchased from Blue Coast Music and learned to appreciate as much as vinyl.
But, having the time and mood to put a record on the turntable, means I am home and brings back memories as I know of every record how I got it, whatever the sound quality is, it’s quality time.
I recently put together a very basic vinyl set-up (500 bucks all-in) just for the sake of childhood memories. I bought a few jazz albums that were recommended by Michael Fremer in one of his youtube videos, and I was blown away by how much better they are than their digital counterparts streaming from Tidal to my DSD Sr. Now this could be due to the recording/mastering differences between vinyl and digital and the fact that I was comparing them to streaming, but better SQ is better SQ especially using equipments that are 20 times cheaper. I am not digging at DSD Sr, but seems to me that the digital still has a long way to go before catching up with the vinyl when done right.
