Lang Lang, a showman for whom I’ve had little time, has gone serious with Bach’s Goldberg Variations. As a stroke of production genius, the issue contains a studio recording and a live recording at Bach’s own church, the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, with the old boy buried a few yards from the piano.
It is interesting how the different venues affect both the sound and the performance.
The only other similar thing I recall is an Emily Barker recording with the Red Clay Halo (Dear River) a full set and then the same album in an acoustic version. I also heard them perform it live.
Personally I am a big fan of live recordings done well, studio recordings can sometimes be a bit too clean and mannered.
