I am thinking of getting a PMG512 to replace MK2 once all the bugs are fixed. I wonder how will it sound compares to MU2 in my system.
Check-out straightwire’s informative comparison where in his system the 512DAC slightly nudged out the MU2.
A second opinion is needed to confirm his findings. Any streamer/dac can match MU2’s performance at a lower price point is quite amazing.
I will not get any gear upgrade until next year (traveling in early December again), so don’t wait for mine😆
I think you meant verify. I heard what I heard under the conditions and gear I specified. That is the only verification I require.
Your results could be different in your setting with your gear. I was not searching for a replacement for the MU2. The PMG gear at Axpona looked impressive, especially the innards of the preamp.
PSA’s liberal return policy and the success of the preamp with the MU2 lead me to the 512 trial.
In a value perspective, I think the MU2, by itself, wins. If you add another preamp and pair of XLR’s (PMG and Stealth in my case) the cost of that move exceeds the cost of the MU2 alone.
What we all think is best is relative to our needs, desires, and budget. YMMV, as they say.
A test drive at home is worth more than a salesman’s pitch in the showroom.
Clear and to the point, a home audition is key no matter the component(s) under consideration.
My main goal is to play my large collection of SACD, and the SQ is already excellent from playing PST/Mk2 into D333. However, if adding a PMG512 will bring further improvements from playing SACDs, then I am done with SACD improvement too.
MU2 is not going anywhere since it’s my Roon core and file storage too.
Cool. Everyone’s different. Everyone wins.

Yes you did in your review in another thread, but your statement above made me think perhaps you did compare both without a pre amp at a later time.

That’s correct, of course. I should have written something like ‘in the mean time’ for better understanding.

No is also an answer, of course. 
I would suggest the same under your conditions, with your system. PSA’s return policy helps to facilitate that.
My “tests” are selfish in nature. I want to see if adding the next cable or component will move the bar. I have no interest in going back to a previous setup that I have upgraded from for academic reasons.
The bottom line is that both the MU2 and PMG are great by themselves and even better with separate preamps. Your results could easily be different with your room and gear. Trust your yourself, not an old selfish guy like me.
By the same logic, did you assume he didn’t use an amp, or speakers either?
Fair enough and thanks for your service of putting out the selfish review. It helped a lot making me almost jump the fence. One could say, I just need that one little last push!
I live across the pond, so a return policy like in the States doesn’t apply here. I’ll let you (guys) know if/what I somehow decide.
