MQA - DRM (trojan horse)

In my TIDAL desktop app I see this:

There appear to be over 400 albums displayed.

This is weird. I don’t see the Master tabs in my IOS app on my iPad nor on my iPhone. The app was updated on 7/11. They are still there on my Bluesound app though.

tmurray1 - thanks, looks like the tidal setup exe needs to setup the new desktop app will call service. I can only get hi res till then… My iPAD does not give me what you have for desktop; need to figure that out too.

We hijacked this thread. We should start a new one if the discussion is to continue.

Agreed, I started this one and then got fixated on TIDAL and MQA, my apologies to the community.

Paul - Yeah, looks like I got a weak attempt at trial subscription for Qobuz. I heard it was fall, 2018 for USA and they’re more geared to classical than pop… Have you heard any info on jazz content? Looking for smooth jazz content like fourplay…

Cardi, go to settings on the desktop player and find where it says check for updates, click on that. It should download the update, if you need the new player, you have to open the executable and run it.
It is no different than loading any other app or program. It will remember your favorites, but be sure to go into to set up and check Master. Then go to where it says Sound or Sound Output, choose your DAC, then click on more options. You want Exclusive on, Forced volume on, the third MQA off, unless your DAC decodes MQA.
For some reason big Tidal updates often change your settings, to lower resolution, and on mine went from my DAC to PC music player. I have had it happen with Windows 10 updates also, where they go back to defaults. If you can no longer access “Add To Queue” send me a Private Message, and I will tell you how to find it. I am not posting it, as they may remove it.

jeffstar - there is no check for updates in the setting for the windows 10 app. When I do go to download the tidalsetup.exe the tidal logo spins for 5 minutes and then I have to just shut it down.

This is not a problem. Many threads here meander heavily off-topic. Members here prefer it this way, although it can drive new members a bit nuts.

Elk - No issues, I started the thread for community awareness and it just took off onto the TIDAL questions. Since I just joined back in May, 2018 I just like to make sure I’m acting appropriately. I started another thread on the TIDAL MQA. It looks like jeffstar did not see it… I really enjoy the community and learn a ton about streaming and issues. I think Paul does a great service to us getting all the equipment issues out there to discuss and help one another. He really cares about the community and it shows. So do you as you are constantly helping where needed. Thanks!

Perfect.

Paul is indeed amazing. And the wealth of knowledge here and willingness to share is unsurpassed.

Not to make this pat on the back fest, but I do have to thank Elk. Elk is a tireless volunteer on these forums and his work and efforts greatly appreciated. A lot of people ask how much he is paid and they’re always a little shocked to learn he does it out of his generous heart. Thank you, Elk, for all you do. And thanks too for our robust and vibrant community. You guys rock!

Paul - Time to pile on. Elk has helped me quite a few times and is very nice and allows the discussion to wander as long as the wanders are respectful of one another. This community is self policing and Elk is amazing. It is very good to see opposing points of view, as long as it is factual based and respectful. With facts, we all learn. In addition thanks for keeping this community vibrant, it says something about a company when the CEO rolls up his sleeves and cares about his product and the community that uses his company’s product. You rock Paul!

Thanks, guys.

As I have noted many times, it starts at the top with Paul. :tada:

This is weird. I don’t see the Master tabs in my IOS app on my iPad nor on my iPhone. The app was updated on 7/11. They are still there on my Bluesound app though.

Unless they added MQA to the tablet app, you can only get Masters in the desktop app.

Cardi, not sure if you want me posting in the new topic, but I am not sure where it is, so I looked back at the older posts. You are still using the older player. So there may not be a check for updates. Did you try going to their website in your browser, and download the new player from there? A couple of things, be sure you have the Tidal app closed, and try restarting your PC before downloading the new version. I can’t remember if you have to sign in or just download, install, then log in. I do remember they required me to do the download from their website.
But even in the old player, if they are still supporting it, you should be able to go to what’s new, click on Masters, and then view more. They all won’t be in there, but more than just 35. All The Doors, Jethro Tull, some Coltrane, Ben Webster, and Charles Mingus all have some MQA. Look for the little “M”. When you do get it handled, check out the 2 Charles Lloyd and the Marvels, both are excellent if you like jazz.

You are correct. I use the bluesound app mainly so I see the Masters tab there. my mistake.

jeffstar & tmurray01 - I figured it out, thanks for helping me. The key to downloading a newer version is to delete your older version, then download the newer version. Now I have a bunch of MQA albums to choose from. I will try and see if I can update my iPAD III… we’ll see. I took a screen shot to show others what TIDAL desktop MQA albums looks like.

I have confirmed the iPad and iPhone apps do not display MQA as they are not supported on the platform. I saw the Master tab on my Bluesound app on both for playing through my Vault. Sorry for the confusion.

Just to make this clear; all the 2,000 MQA albums are available on iPAD, just don’t show up in the GUI as the TIDAL desktop app shows. In addition, there is an updated version of TIDAL for iPAD, I’m just not spending $500 going from iPAD III to iPAD VI just to see if this new version may support the MQA albums as the TIDAL desktop app does. For now I will look on my TIDAL desktop GUI for the albums or the list of MQA albums and search the iPAD for the album. I just did that today and it seems to work. I will also wait till October for Qobuz and see how much better or not than TIDAL. I sure don’t like how SW app developers don’t seem to support older machines; however, that is standard practice for most things. $500 for iPAD VI when I use it for streaming and that is it… way too much money…

Cardi, did you go into settings, found in upper left corner, and check all of them? If your DAC doesn’t show resolution, without verifying settings, you may have to be sure it is set to Masters under quality, and go into settings for your DAC, giving it Exclusive and Forced volume. Third setting will depend on your DAC.
Unless they now have a new tablet app, MQA is not going to play directly from the tablet. As a controller for the desktop app, if that even exists might be able to tell your desktop to play MQA.
Just be sure to check all of your settings. And do it after a Win10 update. For some stupid reason Win 10 will change settings during updates, going back to defaults.
