Music software

Did you install MinimServer on your Melco or on your Windows PC? It needs to be installed on the Melco. For instructions on how to do so, see this link:

https://minimserver.com/install-melco.html

The instructions are very involved and not for the faint of heart, but if you follow them to the letter you should be fine.

Yes, I purchased the Melco used and MinimServer along with Twonky were already installed along with about 400 albums. I installed my music via USB and was planning to go through the previous installs and delete the ones I did not want. I then installed MinimServer and Minimwatch on my desktop Windows 10 computer to be able to manage the music library. I just can’t get MinimWatch or Server to open on the desktop. When I double click the desktop icon all I get is a window that lists extract all, file, etc. When I click on extract all, view finder opens and asks me which program I want to open with.

Okay, different concepts are in play here. First, MinimServer REPLACES the use of Twonky on the Melco. You need to set the Melco’s GUI to stop Twonky from running, as your network could be getting confused between Twonky and MinimServer when searching for playable music files.

Second, you want MinimServer installed on the Melco – and you mentioned that your second-hand Melco came with MinimServer installed. But you do not need MinimServer installed on your Windows 10 desktop PC. That is, I believe, the likely main source of the issue. @wijber, please chime in if you see things differently, but I believe @dabman51 should uninstall MinimServer from his PC.

Once you uninstall MinimServer from your desktop PC and turn Twonky off on your Melco, hopefully you can run MinimWatch on your PC, and also delete music from the Melco via your PC.

OK, I disabled the Twonky and removed the MinimServer from the desktop. I tried opening up the MinimServer labeled Melco install on the network page of the desktop. When it opened, all I got was a page with the date and instructions for installing MinimServer. No music showed up. I then tried my tablet with Bubble and had no music showing for the Melco. I turned Twonky back on and the music showed up on my desktop and tablet.

Sounds like MinimServer is not actually installed on your Melco (or it was installed incorrectly). Getting MinimServer installed properly on a Melco is a very involved process (see the instructions link in Post #61, above).

As for deleting unwanted music from the Melco, MinimServer does not play a role. Did you try @wijber’s suggestion, above, of going to Windows Explorer to add/delete folders and/or files in the Network>Melco>Share directory?

Go to ‘Select library’ in BubbleUPnP, with Minimserver installed & running on the Melco Bubble looks like this

Running the Melco with both Minimserver & Twonky results in one more option to select (something like ‘Local server/files’).

It’s not advised to mess around in the Network>Melco>Minimserver directory, as this is just the directory where Minimserver is installed. Music files & -folders are stored in the Network>Melco>Share directory!

Did you try to open MinimWatch after uninstall Minimserver on you desktop?

Yes,
I tried to open MinimWatch and it only opened my JRiver app., which I have music installed on also. I can open MinimServer on the Twonky page that opens up when I select the Melco Music Library on my desktop network page.

With Windows10 one needs ‘User name’ and ‘Password’ (both ‘nobody’) to access the Melco (sub-)directories and add/delete files in it’s ‘share’ folder.

Hope this helps…?

Maybe try the suggestions here, as well:

I too loved the Minimserver + bubbleupnp. But once in Roon, there was really no going back. The thing just works

I’m amazed no-one has mentioned Jplay Femto software. In my system it easily beat the previous setup of Minimserver with BubbleDS which in turn beat Jriver.

To sound the best, the audio software needs a properly optimized computer (hardware and operating system). For example, Windows server and Audiophile Optimizer. For a nice surprise, try MinorityClean.exe utility.

Like Jriver, Roon is feature-rich but the sound is not first rate IMO. Do you want to drive a high performance Ferrari or a comfy Jaguar?

Tried just about everything I found in the forum, still no minimwatch. I really want to delete some files from the Melco and haven’t had any luck. I tried using the share method and even though the files were deleted from my computer, they are still on the Melco.

I was checking out Jplay and it appears that is for computers and NAS drives. Is this correct?

For Roon, that’s where HQPlayer can really help.

As I posted above, it sounds to me like MinimServer is not [properly] installed on your Melco. And even if MinimServer is installed, MinimWatch would not be necessary to delete music files from the Melco. At this point, I suggest you post a help request on the MinimServer forum. Good luck.

Thanks, I posted a help request on MinimServer forum. Meanwhile, per your suggestion, I am going to reinstall the app on the Melco.

Jplay is server/player software for windows computers. You can have the music files locally or on a nas which it treats as external storage. You don’t need server software on the nas but can use Mnimserver if you want. There’s plenty of info on jplay.eu.

I reinstalled MinimServer as you suggested and that was the problem. I finally go it all straightened out. By the way, are you running your Melco via USB into the DS? If so, what are your impressions. I plan to compare it to my Toshiba laptop into the DS with a WireWorld USB cable.

Great news, glad it’s working now. Mine is set up as follows:

Melco > USB > Matrix X-SPDIF 2 > I2S > DS

Putting the Matrix between the Melco and the DS resulted in a noticeable improvement in sound quality.

Sounds like something to look into. What 12S cable are you using?
