New Firmware released

Even worse;

In a worst case situation you risk wrecking the DS by loading wrong firmware.

Example: Loader by a mistake says that PIC should be loaded into the FPGA part of the memory.

My point was simply that by saying that ‘11-061-01-1-fmc-6.zip’ should return <8BF72A41FA5E5A3960800D4B8FB2B06B> – md5 then everything should be secure. Unzip and save to SD card prior to loading it into the DS. To run this utility on your PC is a no brainer.

I also think that this signifies how the software is treated inhouse…

Can we get the original DirectStream firmware up on the Downloads page? Want to compare them, plus to see if suggestion of restoring original, then upgrading to new firmware a 2nd time exonerates the demons (not sure how, but worth a shot I suppose)… -Jeff

Jeff, just an encouraging note. I did exactly what you propose to do and had great success. (even though it defies explanation)

I posted the complete official version of the older firmware, 5407 on the Downloads site. So now people have access to both 5407 and 6115.

Yes, it’s up now.

There is a typo on the display with the new firmware. If your display shows a sample rate of 44.1K there is an extraneous “;” in front of the 4.

I don't see that here. Does it depend on what the sample rate was before it was 44.1k? Or on is that on the Bridge? (Mine's out at the moment.)

Here it is Ted.

It will be fixed in the next version.

No bridge

Hehe

Here’s a fun little evaluation chart for the DS firmware evaluations.

mandala.pngAudiophile

Audiophile discourse traditionally focuses on the outward aspects of music reproduction, which appear in the pink ring and are termed sonic performance in the legend to the mandala’s left. The superior outward performance of AMM components enables improved listening at progressively subtler or more inward levels. Acoustic fidelity is invoked in the orange second ring to address acoustic essentials. Musical re-creation, in the gold third ring, speaks more directly to the subjective appreciation of music itself. Personal experience in the green fourth ring addresses the cumulative impact of success in the prior rings: how the listener feels. Finally, the transpersonal experience of being is realized in audio through the perfection of tone.

If you read this and other threads there are examples of this loop of try and error. Hash is just another tool to help you in troubleshooting.

Yes (although it is a huge assumption the firmware downloaded incorrectly merely because someone has a problem), already acknowledged there are benefits to hash, but there are other considerations which I will not repeat again - to avoid similar unproductive looping. :)

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do you insert the SD card? I understand that the pins are supposed to be facing up, but do you insert the card into the unit on the short side or long side?

I’ve seen pictures (PWD) where it looks like the entire card should be in the unit - inserting on the long side, but my card does not seem to fit that way. If I insert on the short side, it seems to go in, but just slightly and I don’t want to do anything wrong.

Thanks

Please ignore my question, I figured it out after calling tech support - insert on the short side.

Thanks

Not a stupid question! These things are only obvious after you have done them. :)

Good to hear you have it figured out.

OK so how is the general consensus of 6115 these days? I have gone back to 5407 original and back several times the past day waiting in between an hour or so to let it settle. I’ve also immediately rebooted the DS each time according to Gordon’s suggested load approach. Each time I have heard increased sibilance on female vocals and decreased, almost flattened depth with 6115. I get an increased sense of the acoustical whole with 5407 and more body especially female vocals. I get a sense of someone not just a disembodied gloating vocal in space.

Trying to get a better handle on this. Also confirming longer settle times with 6115 improves further like the initial break in when the DS was new with 5407 installed.

Odd

Nothing more annoying than a gloating vocal.

My sense is the sound stage is moved back a bit. But, at least on my system, it is deeper as well.

What you hear as disembodied may be heard by others as increased clarity and separation.

I remain a little disappointed in the bass with both FW.

Argh!!! I HATE spell check on my phone. Meant "floating".

Of course y’all knew that. I hate to gloat on my mistakes.

+1.

But oddeophile, with 5407 do you not hear the high end harmonics as being truncated compared to the way the rest of the spectrum expresses itself and then decays naturally? Doesn’t that sound more “as it should” with 6115?

Elk do you have a sub woofer or just L&R speakers? I have a sub and all the bass is there only it seems to be with less distortion, more correct. And this give IMO the impression of less power on the bass.

There is indeed less “bass pressure”. I will try to set the bass controls back to 0db on my Summits. With the PWD the controls were set to -2 and -4dB.
