Big Bend N.P. is a remarkable place. It’s been more than twenty years since I was there in early summer. What an inferno it was! I remember when I made this photo looking over the Rio Grande river into Mexico at almost 9:00 p.m. and it was still nearly a hundred degrees F.

One of the most unusual places I explored in Big Bend was Oak Creek Canyon. Rather than the usual narrow sandstone canyons one finds in other parts of the western US, this canyon is a pale cream limestone that’s quite smooth in texture.

We love going to Big Bend, usually in October or April before the heat sets in!
