Drummer Ronnie Gardiner was born in Rhode Island, 1932, and would go on to play with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Gerry Mulligan and Dexter Gordon…
It’s perhaps his story of playing with Charlie Parker - on a train of all things - which sticks in the memory most!
He recounted the story a few years ago to French magazine Jazzhot:
"I went to New York, at 19, to study. I was there from 1951 to 1955. I even played with Charlie Parker, on a train, coming back to New York! This was in 1951. He was with his wife, Chan. I ran into him, and we started talking. Then some soldiers recognized him and asked him to play. He took out his saxophone and asked me if I had my sticks. I said yes. Then he asked me my name and said, “Sit down next to me, we’ll play together.”
