Now that I’ve had some time with functional streaming (original Qobuz non-connectivity my fault)
I have some thoughts on the complete PMG 512. For those of you that want your analysis served whole and to the point…I like it, very much, it’s a keeper.
Specifically, this test is a comparison between the Grimm MU2 and the PMG 512, both tied to a
PMG Pre, both at their best. Note that neither unit has a Pre Out pass-thru and as such their preamps are active, but at a fixed level. The PMG Pre is the gain machine, and a great one, that makes both
the MU2 and 512 better. So, I can’t (and won’t, sorry) be of any help in pre, or no pre, comparisons,
or verses separate streamers like an AirLense (never had one), or against the MK2 DAC (though I did have one, with the trans mod and latest software) as the MU2 surpassed it long ago.
For those keeping score on the connections and add-on’s used, they are hooked up with Stealth Sakra V17LE interconnects and Cloud The Grande power, CAD G-1 ground boxes, Stack feet.
No new fuses yet.
Solely on sonics, the nod goes to the 512. And, this nod, is more “by a nose” than “a slam dunk”.
They are more alike than different. Both sound very natural, engaging and musical. Instruments have their space with plenty of depth and air around them. Things are quiet, very quiet, yet dynamic when called upon. Bass extension is good, tight and the highs have little or no glare. Recording quality is
easily revealed, and often chosen over artistry, truthfully. With all these similarities, I just felt the 512 was just a bit better in all that makes these units appealing. It keeps my attention longer and listening more intently. If pushed, I would say the additional quiet (low noise floor) makes instruments more defined in space, with more air, and more like what I believe the instrument should sound like.
However derived, I like the results.
Please note that these attributes are in both the streaming camp and with CD playback. I thought
it would drop a peg with the PMG streamer section engaged, as Grimm is a well known leader.
I’ve always been a “separates are better” kind of guy but having a streamer/DAC combo doesn’t seem to have a downside, and potentially the reverse could be true.
On the flip side, I do like the MU2’s single interface via phone, Roon core, and internal SSD.
I’m using Qobuz Connect and hope to get up to speed and “Roon-like”, if possible, soon.
It’s possible this second unit could change a little with more burn-in (it’s been a week). I will certainly update if so.
