Is the design the same as what we saw at AXPONA, Paul, in that there is no transimpedance input?
The PMG phono does have a transimpedance input in addition to the voltage inputs. If you have a low impedance moving coil cartridge the transimpedance stage sounds amazing
Hey, great!
Not sure how I missed that when I saw it in Chicago.
You speak of voltage inputs in the plural. Looking at the website picture of the back of the PMG Phono I indeed see both RCA and XLR voltage inputs. If I use the RCA input for my tonearm with a mono moving magnet cartridge, will I be forced to use the RCA transimpedance inputs for my tonearm with a stereo moving coil, or will the menu also allow me to use the XLR input for my moving coil? I ask because many moving coils have a high enough internal resistance that one might prefer not to use the transimpedance option. Another problem possibly forcing transimpedance is that most moving coil setups don’t have an XLR output.
Could be an excellent match for my Mutech Hayabusa, which currently favors a Sutherland Little Loco.
I’d consider transimpedence as a special application for very low output/low impedance moving coil cartridges with a coil resistance of 6 ohms or less.
Yes that is exactly my concern, though your cutoff of 6 ohms is lower than other values I have seen (10, 15, as high as 20). If you are right I will not love the reproduction of my 12 ohm Audio-Technica ART9XA using the transimpedance option, so unless I toss that cartridge (and my Shelter models), I would need to use two voltage inputs to support both my MM and MC tonearms. Thus I asked if there is a menu option for two voltage inputs. But even if this option is on the menu (which I doubt), both my tonearms have RCA outputs and I would be loathe to use an RCA-to-XLR adapter for such a low voltage. My fear is that, by catering to the transimpedance option, the PMG Phono is likely for some users to be less flexible than the Stellar Phono. I do acknowledge the majority of users likely use only one cartridge/tonearm at a time.
Actually, IIRC Ron Sutherland had suggested a limit of 2 ohms for optimal performance with the LOCO series of phono preamps. The only way to tell is try them, not so easy these days.
Well a phono cart is balanced by its nature, and the RCA connector is a compromise. While I do use RCA in my system, changing the cable to XLR is a distinct possibility. Personally neither cartridge you mentioned AT or Shelter are good candidates for a transimpedance phono stage.
