“Rodney Dangerfield” brands

Brands that seem to “get no respect” from those who seem to exist in the highest echelons of the so called high end. I see that when these brands are brought up - brands that we know to be good and even able to punch well above their weight, they are quickly dismissed or outright ignored. In my wanderings I’ve seen evidence that PS Audio is often treated as a RDB (Rodney Dangerfield Brand, :copyright: me), along with VPI. I find it interesting that both are American brands that have a sort of “blue collar” ethos about them. I’ve wondered if that has something to do with it (although, let’s face it, some of the stuff ain’t exactly cheap anymore!). I’m sure there are others, but I felt like starting this after seeing additional such posts on the web for (or evidence of ignoring posts mentioning) both brands.

I feel the same way about Legacy Audio, they have some great stuff, they “don’t get no respect!"!

A superb American brand that hardly ever gets mentioned is Aesthetix.

Agreed. My friend has their Rhea phono preamp. Absolutely sublime.

Simple explanation. You have to charge a lot and advertise a lot to get respect and peoples attention. Then those who purchase those brands have bragging rights.

If you purchase a brand that doesn’t gouge you or advertise a lot, even if it punches way above other popular brands, you have no bragging rights.

Orchard Audio

Basis turntables (and tonearms) - all built to incredible tolerances; they even manufacture their drive belts in-house because no others were made with adequate precision.

I feel Rogue Audio doesn’t get enough mention & praise for exactly the reasons Tony and Audioholic state. Good stuff and great customer service. I’d love to have a Cronus Magnum as a change of pace component one of these days.

Very few people disregard perceived status in how they present themselves to the outside world.

Unfortunately AJ Conti’s wife (may he RIP) announced Basis is up for sale. Hopefully it can be saved.

Not sure of if I’d consider PS to get no respect, unless one is talking about ultra expensive gear like they do on Whats Best forum. And certainly PS’s gear in the last decade has gone more upscale.

Regarding VPI, I did have a turntable manufacturer who uses very high quality motors tell me that he considers what they use to be much lower quality.

Sadly, it appears Stealth Audio Cables are now unappreciated.
Weird.

Spot on. No better example of “bragging rights” in action than Jay’s recent videos. My Cousin Vinny Sac-O-Suds line: “you’re paying for advertising”. Dr. Zeuss “The Sneetches” stars on thars (which was a theme built upon the WWII forcing of Jews to wear the Star of David). Don’t blame the advertiser but rather those who “feed” them with their purchases.

Boutique brands are more obscure outside of the small audiophile world by nature of what they offer, but I wouldn’t say any of the brands mentioned here so far are In the “get no respect” category.

There you go.

I think it depends on which online neighborhood it is.

Indeed, on the neighborhood. Some of the other forums are chocked full of cable deniers and zip cord boys :joy:

Haven’t noticed Sanders Sound Systems listed and they are US-based (now in Maryland). I have their Model 10e hybrid 'stats and two Magtech amplifiers along with the dBx Venu360 LMS (Loudspeaker Management System) typically used with live event sound.

Couldn’t be happier with this gear and their customer support is outstanding. Small brand but with unique design attributes and stellar sound IMHO.

a few brands immediately come to mind:

Paradigm

Golden Ear

Parasound

Adcom

Hafler

PS Audio

Perhaps it’s less the matter of appreciation and more the lack of affordability to the majority of those interested in audio.

Appreciation can only be had after being exposed to, in this case, Stealth’s properties. That exposure isn’t self-evident. Even for members of this forum!
