The wait seems to get too long now, as your comment doesn’t even sound as if it’s fully sure to be produced at all and especially not with a planned date. We hit a snag in the moving coil stage that’s been a head scratcher for some time now. The PCBs are done, the technology we’re using is done, but we’ve just not had the time to get the bugs worked out and so it keeps getting shoved to the side.
The amps are almost done so that should open a window of opportunity for the phono to be worked on and put into production.
Thanks much Paul! At the time I thought it was a finished product by Darren Myers, so it’s a bit surprising there’s still a major snag, or did you change his design? But good news it’s upcoming!!
It is/was a major design effort by Darren and we have the PCBs here and it is the original design for sure. Darren didn’t always give us finished designs, especially on the more complex projects. It was/is up to our team, mostly our Chief Engineer, Bob Stadtherr, to turn the complex design into a fully functioning piece of art worthy of PS Audio’s name and performance standards (he’s been working on Darren’s brilliant amp designs for half a year now for example).
So yes, it’s Darren’t design and yes, Darren is amazing as is his work. And Chris Brunhaver. Two superstars!
Perfect, I’m looking forward to the release! Things are simply more complex than someone who isn’t familiar with electronics design, might think, even if a working prototype must have already existed at the time. But of course, a prototype is not the same thing as a finished product on the market.
Paul in the meantime I saw a video where you explained that it still needs some time to ensure compatibility and trouble free operation for everyone, which is a good thing.
Is the design still planned to have a power supply built into the phono amp? The focus on a one box design instead of maximum silence from radiation and noise is quite unusual at this level of quality and price.
And one more question besides the power supply topic: do you plan to offer SUTs for use with the MM input of the upcoming phono amp? One strength of this phono will be that it offers voltage and current driven MC + MM + optionally MM+SUT.
I’m also interested in the PMG DAC. There I have 2 topics making me a little skeptical. The one is, that with a built in streamer, even if galvanically isolated, I’d even have the disadvantage of a shared power supply and certain noise of the built in streamer, even if I’d connect a separate streamer. This also might explain just minor differences when both options (internal-external), were compared by forum members. Or is there an option to disconnect the internal streamer completely by jumpers or similar? The second topic is what I generally partly read between the lines of several posts in terms of a certain history of bugs and reliability topics of products. But this seems to be a risk to take or not. I’m definitely impressed by the features of those products!

A general answer from a bystander on the reliability question of PMG DAC - when there were bugs in the DAC folks were not shy about reporting those on the forum. One by one, those folks have been satisfied with the fixes and as far as I recall, there have been virtually no reports of bugs for months and months. Additionally, forum members generally agree that the built in streamer of the PMG DAC is superior to external streamers (like the AirLens etc.) Further, there seems to be a consensus that the PMG Preamp is the one to upgrade to first followed by the PMG DAC based on SQ imporvement .
Via the display menu, you can remove power from any of the inputs as well as from the streamer. A standard procedure for the times when the streamer loses its mind is to power-cycle the streamer via the menu.

Oh really? So it’s indeed possible to separate the internal streamer from its power supply completely by the menu?
This would be a very good and important feature for a possible external streamer use in future.
If the internal one it even betters the AirLens or others when switched off during external streamer use, this result is worth more than when just bettering them while having both disadvantages with an external streamer - the one of the external one - and the one of the still idle and ‚polluting’ internal one.
Yes. The menu allows you to remove power from any of the inputs to the DAC, and the internal streamer is one of the items on the list of inputs along with I2S, USB, etc. I have all inputs other than the streamer powered off, but if I were using an external streamer I’d turn off the internal streamer and turn on the appropriate input.
