Thanks for sharing both of those Fred Hersch releases. I do have Whirl, and truly enjoy John Hebert’s bass playing on that one. I do not have Horizons and unfortunately it is unavailable on Tidal. I do see it available on vinyl at Discogs.
John Hebert is a fantastic bassist for sure. Marc Johnson is on Horizons. I’ve been enjoying Johnson’s recent solo record on ECM. Gives the subs a workout.
@jazzophile and @weedeewop. Thanks for posting other albums by the Fred Hersch trio. Something new (for me) to look forward to!
Lisa Sokolov “Presence”
A very interesting singer, lots of mult-tracked performances here. Her daughter is also an interesting singer.
Oddly enough she sometimes reminds me of Grace Slick.
Terry Morel “Songs of a Woman in Love” Bethlehem/Solid Records Japan cd
Herbie Mann, flute; Ralph Sharon, piano; Jay Cave, bass; Christy Febbo, drums. Recorded live at Montclair Club, Jackson Heights, NY, January 1956
On my wish list to purchase. Currently all digital purchases are on hold as I no longer have working either a working transport and DAC at my current location. Let me know how you like it, I can always enjoy it via proxy.
How does the sound compare to the Mosaic release? TIA.
Well, I listened to the SACD and the DSD layer and that always has a leg up on a Redbook version in my system. But they sound quite close. Both, though mastered by different engineers, had a rather “flat” character to them, which is better than some earlier editions.
Streaming Ben Monder’s 2016 ecm release. on Tidal Typical ecm treatment, withdrawn and ethereal. A good listen to these ears.

A second listen with Ben Monder, streaming on Tidal. Ben and Chris Speed have joined the jazz combo The Bad Plus. What once was a piano centric trio has evolved into a guitar and saxophone quartet. Should be interesting. On this Sunnyside release Ben is joined by Tim Rainey and Tony Malaby. Tony figures prominently on saxophone. The set has a more energetic feel to it with Tony’s contribution as well as being a live set. Reminds me a bit of the early Terje Rypdal, especially Odyssey.
Sorry to hear that your digital gear is down for the count. I’ll bet you have a couple of records you could listen to
.
I’ve listened to the first 2 cds in the set. As expected, the music is interesting and sometimes beautiful. These players know each other very well. This sounds like composed music, but the liner notes suggest that there is a strong improv component inside the scores.
I am listening to just to listen at this point, not trying to ‘understand’ the titles of each piece in relation to the music. The collection of symphonies is Wadada’s tribute to Chicago and the people of the Midwest. He refers to many AACM musicians in the titles of each section, and the fourth symphony is dedicated to American presidents Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.
I’m still not sure I understand Wadada’s concept of a symphony, apparently he was inspired by Don Cherry’s ‘Symphony for Improvisors’.
This is why I love Braxton, I can’t understand his naming conventions and I so I can listen to his music just as sound.
Speaking of sound, this set is excellent, a little bright on my system.
Disc 3 of Miles Davis “Bootleg Series Vol. 2” Sony Blu-Spec CD edition.
I was so excited when this first volume was released–a promising start to a great series of reissues.
Regarding Wadada and Anthony I tend to just listen and absorb the sound. Repeated listens tend to reveal more of their message, provided that was their intent. Once I get my digital system up and running I’ll pick-up Wadada’s Great Lakes Chicago box set. It shows promise. Thanks for sharing. Also, thanks for the sentiment regarding my digital system being down. Fortunately I have a scaled down option with a streamer and CD transport in a den dedicated system. Then there is vinyl, which is always available, and may I add reliably so.
As long as you have alternatives you are good. I only have one system, so a single point of failure of my dac or transport would hurt.
I’m going to dig out my copy of ‘Symphony for Improvisors’, haven’t listened to that record in too long.
