Although I personally prefer to think of his OTHER August birthdate as official (mainly because I share it) I’ll be playing some Pops today–we jazz lovers owe him so much. Make that modern music lovers owe him so much.

As an aside: Though a national holiday, this day of the year has a somber element for me. On July 4 seventy-one years ago my would-be older brother, my parents’ first born, was born still born --he would have had my name. . . . I know that had a deep sorrowful impact on their life (though they revealed little about that to my siblings and me). I find it interesting he was born on what Louis Armstrong thought was his birthday, and a year later I was born on the August birthday that was found to be Louis’ birthdate. The other similarity between Pops and us is that our father was also named William Armstrong.
Original mono, or the newly developed stereo? Both are great imo.

I have many more decades listening to the mono. . . I think I prefer it, maybe just for that reason. “Sid’s Ahead” is one of my very favorite jazz pieces.
There are monos that I prefer. Contrane’s Blue Train for example. Don’t know why but I do.
I prefer some monos as well, sometimes the mix is more dynamic or focused–especially during the early years of stereo.
This Milestones stereo mix was created in 2001. . . there was no stereo version before that. The music is fantastic, and both mixes sound good.
