This is where my Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers journey began. At the the Cafe Bohemia Volume One, followed by Volume Two, and then on to Live at Birdland Volume One and Volume Two.

Listening to Live at Cafe Bohemia Volume One at the moment, and have come to realize this LP has been away from my Linn Sondek for far too long. It is a fun set with Horace Silver, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Doug Watkins, and Art.

Certainly the best early Jazz Messengers album I own, this being a Blue Note Music Matters 45 RPM double LP.

Wonderful 2024 album from pianist Phillip Golub.

In the liner notes Vijay Iyer calls this vein of jazz/improv the ‘New Brooklyn Complexity’.

Agreed. Music to pay attention to.

Turkish free jazz outfit Konstrukt plays with Marshall Allen. Jeez.

Just ordered this cd, while streaming it on Qobuz. Forty-two short compositions written for performance by the World Saxaphone Quartet. Not as raucous as I remember the WSQ sounding, very approachable .

jphghes2, a nice string of music there. WSQ was a Quartet I followed from the 70’s into the early 90’s. The music of Arthur Blythe and Chico Freeman led me to David Murray, all via the India Navigation records, in the mid-70’s and ultimately the WSQ. For it’s a day a wild ride.

I’ll be stepping back for a bit as my wife and I are starting our Colorado o vacation. Taking Amtrak to Denver then driving up to Boulder.

Oh no, So sad to read of Cassandra Wilson’s passing–she was four months younger than I. I’m a big fan of her voice.
