Coming from Verve in November, Louis Armstrong “One Night in Highland Park,” LP, cd and streaming:

91prn+4VOpL._SL1500_.jpg

A previously unreleased concert recorded in March 1957. That night Louis Armstrong and his All Stars played a fundraiser at Highland Park High School in Illinois, and the school’s student stage crew staffed the show. Joel Goldstein, the student acting as stage manager for the visit, taped the performance and kept the recording for seven decades.

Armstrong came to Highland Park on the back of recent successes, including ‘Mack The Knife’, the Ella and Louis album with Ella Fitzgerald and the box office hit High Society. He was also touring the world for the US State Department as America’s goodwill ambassador. The set brings that touring show into a suburban school auditorium, opening with ‘When It’s Sleepy Time Down South’ and closing out with ‘When The Saints Go Marching In’.

The recording was transferred, mixed and mastered by Kevin Reeves. Includes liner notes by Ricky Riccardi, Armstrong’s biographer and Director of Research Collections for the Louis Armstrong House Museum. Recommended.
