Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 3)

A really extraordinary, great-sounding set (on Qobuz).

Joel Ross is a great player and fine composer.

Yes I agree about Ross. This is not one of my favorites of his, but by the time this was out I was loving any playing he did (first discovered him on the “In Common” Walter Smith III release from 2018 or so.

Somehow I’ve missed pianist Micah Thomas’ output as a group leader or soloist. He’s on several of Immanuel Wilkins’ sets - his playing on ‘The 7th Hand’ is really nice.

This is a set of tunes that Thomas wrote for a large group. These guys can play anything, and they really do. The music jumpcuts all over the place. Sound quality is wonderful.

I’m going to need a little more time to figure this one out.

Micah Thomas - piano
Immanuel Wilkins - alto sax
Adam O’Farrill - trumpet
Nicole Glover - tenor sax
Caleb Smith - trombone
Kanoa Mendenhall - bass
Kweko Sumbry - drums

Is it “Mountains?” That one took a bit but has grown on me as a sort of kick back and zone out good one. (I’ve posted that on this forum at least twice).

Myriam Alter “Where is There” Enja cd

I like all her cds but this one with maestro Jacques Morelenbaum is the best imo.

Micah is worth seeking out as is Immanuel Wilkins. Plenty to appreciate.

Keefe Jackson Quartet The Story This Time is a wonderful set featuring Jason Stein on bass clarinet. Now, do I follow-up with MIngus or Dolphy? The quartet features Josh Abrams (b), Frank Rosaly (dr), and Jason Stein (Bass clarinet), and the leader Keefe Jackson (contrabass clarinet and tenor sax).
