Me too. Even my cable modem and networking gear has a 1300RPM 120mm Noctura to keep it all long lived. Most anything kept at or below 90F/32C will live long and serve without error (at least not heat induced).
Exactly- it’s not just discs that benefit, by a long way!
I like the higher look and the straight vertical orientation you have created. Have you measured to the center height of the speaker and oriented your listening space so you ears are at that height? Sounds goofy but I have found the best imaging when my ears are at the center height of the Maggies.
hey MNFats! Nope. Haven’t measured exactly, but it does sound much better in this orientation. I’ll maybe do some analysis today.
With my kids home all the time (and have been ever since I got the speakers), the opportunities for critical listening have been few.
But I put on Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section yesterday and gave it some volume, and when “You’d be so Nice to Come Home To” came on, I got the chills. Every detail was more pronounced, and the soundstage was wider and deeper. It was awesome.
Also spent some time yesterday fabricating some moulding to hide wires. They sneak under the hearth trim now and around the corner and out the back to the speakers/subs. Rug covers them until they go under the moulding. I know cables under rugs aren’t highly condoned around these parts, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
When i can get out into the wild, I’ll find some better stain that matches the floor, but I’m happy with it for now.
Yes, It seems that things image and sound best when ones ears are centered with
the mylar. I am going to experiment with moving 1.7’s off the floor and I will report.
Sitting on the couch, I’d say my ears are pretty close to the middle of the mylar panel.
In any case, these things sound great. So much happier now than I was with those angled brackets.
Good to hear (no pun intended). I never liked Maggies tilted back.
I am experimenting with getting them off the floor, seems to have
better focus and tighter bass.
Was my experience, too. Much better focus without tilt.
I had my Maggies hanging from the ceiling the time I owned them.
Time to come out of the closet. I have been stalking this great thread for so many hours of great watching, reading and learning. I have enjoyed the experience of being invited into caves and living rooms of fellow audiophiles. So many great set-ups and thoughtful philosophies and discussions, all positive contributions. And since I am the happy owner of a PS BHK preamp, I feel that this also has to be the right forum for me to come out as an audiophile. I am yet another Dane, by the way, in this thread (so few of us around!).
My journey began in the previous millennium with the acquisition of an STD 305 TT with SME Series III and an Ortofon MC20 cart (patriotic of course), a Pioneer SA9800 amplifier (where have all the buttons gone?), sending a not-too-bad signal through twisted Luxman cables to a set of KLH 355, The Baron. Talk about “wall of sound”, mostly painted by Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa.
And now this, what you see in the pictures, some forty years and many exchanges, investments, tweaks and hours of listening later. Pride of place is taken by that first stab at premium speakers by Revel, the stand-mounted first generation Revel Gems, which combine fast and free (no cabinet colouration whatsoever) micro-dynamics and transparency with rich tonality, a combination hard to find in a time when so many loudspeaker brands seem to follow a fashion of providing a sense of resolution through anemic tonality. And the Gems are very happy in the company of a push-pull WE300B amp hand-built by one of our national tube gurus from AB Audio, and packed with goodies from Tamura and Duelund. I appreciate the luxury that some in this forum have of pursuing their hobby in the vicinity of Boulder, but I have to say that being in the national neighbourhood of the people at Duelund has its upsides too. The power amp enjoys the company of my excellent PSA BHK preamp. More tubes – can’t live without them.
Somewhere on my journey in the late nineties, I went all digital (may soon revise that ill-conceived turn!) and invested in Advantage DAC and transport, courtesy of the talented Swede, Mr. Bladelius. Quite undigital-sounding at the time, and upgraded since – so much so that I am sorry to report to this forum that they went neck-and-neck with the comparable twenty years younger PSA set in a one-hour audition and so have not been replaced. Towards the bottom lurks the miniscule dCS Network Bridge, very neat.
I recently introduced a duo of the newish Rel S510s, which have now been dialed in beyond what I thought would be possible (Paul was always right!). Holy moly, I am now a staunch supporter of monitors with well-integrated subs (which, incidentally, I seem to share with quite a proportion of contributors to this thread). Note that the Rels are sitting on heavy slates decoupled from the wooden floor by Discs of Silence by Solid Tech, tilted at an angle towards the listener (which shouldn’t make a difference but it does, maybe because of the forward-facing coupling of the passive bottom unit) and coupled by heavy 1.2 cm thick sheets of glass and 1.2 kg door stops. It works to perfection. Door stops are also used to temper the bell tower effect on the Gems. Cheap and effective tweak, highly recommended. And, by the way, I am obsessed with coupling and decoupling, as the picture reveals.
Analogue cables are MIT Magnum MAs throughout and digital and power cables are split between Nordost and that recent Danish audio phenomenon, Ansuz, who supply surprisingly good cables. The sum total is a holographic, rich and transparent wall-to-wall sound … but, what’s much more important, it all translates into wonderful music. Nowadays perhaps more inclined towards Monk and Mahler. What the heck, somewhere along the journey I grew older. Immersion. Bliss. That kind of pursuit.
And all this is possible because my significant and beautiful other lets me occupy my little equilateral triangle in our matrimonial home (but audiophile spouses are for another thread).
Welcome! Glad you’ve finally joined! Surprised you didn’t earlier to share this because it’s stunning!
Very kind welcome, thank you. I know, been around too long lurking and about time that I contribute.
Very nice. Great write-up. I too have a pair of REL’s with floorstanding speakers. The speakers are due for replacement as they are the weak link now. Revel is the brand I am looking at. Still torn between monitors or floor standing ones.
My system is a Dr Feickert Blackbird turntable with two arms the main one which I consider one of the best period is the Thales Simplicity II pivoted liner tracking arm, the second one is a Jelco 850M 10" knife bearing. The second table you see above is the Technics SL1200GAE.
Current pnono stage is a Modwright PH9.0 which I was a beta tester for I know Dan Wright. I have the Stellar phono on order. I have had at least 6 others in the last few years trying to find what i like. Preamp is the PS Audio BHK it is awesome. Amps are Nord One Up Class D mono amps. Speakers are PSB Imagine T3. M1200’s on order also
That A95 is so wicked looking!
Is that an NRG power cable? How do you like it?
Yes. It’s the .5 feeding the regenerator. I also have a 1CS I think it’s called on my DS. I like them. I compared with a Shunyata Delta NR feeding the P10 and to my ears the NRG sounded fuller and cleaner. Ever so slightly but still like it better. Cost was not a factor for me.
For the size, 4.5awg I believe, it’s pretty darn flexible too. Highly recommended and I encourage everyone to support the small guys where they can. Nawaz makes them because he’s passionate about power and very large conductors!
Very cool! I’m upgrading my stellar power cables to NRG’s .1 design. I do agree, we need to help the small guys out, especially in these times!
I’ll concur with supporting the small guys. I have quite a few of Nawaz’ .5 cables and I like them. For me cost was secondary to performance and custom lengths. For other power cables, I have Siltech and Shunyata NR’s. The NRG do hold their own in good company.
That’s great that you guys are enjoying the NRG cables. I also am thinking about purchasing his AC cables and possibly his speaker cables.
Yes! Resolving and musical!
