System Photos!

Just got these Maggie MMG’s last weekend. Had to to some mods cause the Treble was soft regardless of positioning. They will be relegated for Surround Channel duties one the Final-Audio M12’s arrive next months (?).

Since thee came with no stands, I made a pair using some scrap wood. Since it will tip over, I placed my Mac MC50’s on them since they were no “match” for the MMG’s. I’m running them with the solid Silver wired ArgentPur Amps with Orchard Audio Ultra modules. They are also hokding the Amps down from keeling over.

I replaced the 12uF ERSE Cap with 9.5uF using two Solen Metallized PolyCaps I had (2.5uF in parallel with 7.0uF). That help the Treble without screwing up the midrange or Bass. I also tore out the fuseholder and tweeter attenuator connections.

Hockey Pucks !

Taking out the tweeter attenuator is most likely the cause of the dull treble.

I did. Have a look at the last photo.

Yes, I saw. This is why the treble is soft.
I have the Magnepan LRS+ and kept the treble attenuator installed. They sound wonderful.

What were your stereo rigs over the years???

Would you go ahead and describe how the MBL is better (even somehow worse?) than any of those large-scale setups you’ve had?

This seems contradictory - not attenuating tweeter level makes it dull?
Maybe it’s the kind of component used for attenuation that intrinsically has a sharper sound.

Not really. I have attached a portion from the LRS+ manual…

Aha… so it’s not really an attenuator in the literal sense, the resistor is.

I enjoyed my audio journey with all the systems I have owned throughout the years.
The components and speakers were different at various stages along the way, so tough to call out the best combinations.
I’d have to say the laggers were the Dynaudio Temptation and Aerial Acoustics 20T speakers.
Could have been the room or the electronics, but never could get these really dialed in.
The Genesis II speakers were the first to really show me what good imaging was all about.
The Evolution Acoustics MM3 speakers were massive in size and scale, but were difficult to move for adjustments and actually had a pretty tight sweet spot. Also had an internal speaker amp go out and had to be replaced.
But the MBL speakers, with the addition of the REL Subwoofers, have created this harmonic synergy that is incredible. They complete disappear and create a 3D imaging picture of sound that is intoxicating! Room acoustic treatments are minimal, since the MBL’s like to reflect their omnidirectional drivers. The sweet spot is also very wide.
I am enjoying trying different tweaks now, since I am satisfied with the major components (except possibly MBL or EMM Labs amps in the future).

I guess the jumper bypasses the attenuator.

The maggies arrive with the jumper factory installed. They recommend leaving it as is. They say if one needs attenuation, then use a resistor instead of the jumper. Magnepan also includes resistors that are in sealed packages but not connected to the speakers.

I’ve heard the LRS+ many times and it’s one of those products out there that gives way more than the price would leave you to expect. If I still had my second residence, they would be in it.

I like setting up the LRS+ in my main system from time to time. They are fun speakers, and yes, they sound WAY better than one would expect for the price.

Sorry, missed your post. I ‘liked’ the amp, but it didn’t have the oomph of the BHK’s. Took too long to warm up, over an hour till it started to hit it’s stride. Pro’s: defined imaging, ultra quiet, jet black in between passages.

Those Rel Subwoofers grew up fast!

Such a great view!

Now that is a great progression of speakers/systems! Congrats! Oh, and where they are housed, not too shabby either! Thanks for sharing. This “hobby” is nuts, as I LOVE my FR30’s, but MBLs…

My speaker progression is not that impressive before the FR20, though I did manage to take a photo when I had all 3 in the same room.

I can only imagine what your systems must sound like.
