The Grimm MU2

Although MU2 can read up to DSD256 files, it does not have I2S input nor is it able to read SACD. For that reason, I kept my PST and DS MK2 to play SACDs.

For SACDs, I bypass the MU2 and go directly from CD player to integrated amp. But in order to maintain some parity, I had to splurge on a good cable. HiFi is the gift that keeps giving . . . and periodically also taking! :money_mouth_face:

This will be my future soon. Once Gryphon D333 arrives, PST/MK2 will go to it directly, and my wife can use the remote instead of MU2 App. to select streaming and discs. This is the most significant improvement to her, and the sole reason I am allowed for the amp upgrade.

Is there a CD/SACD player (one box solution) you can consider then?

There are a few Japanese brands such as Esoteric SACD player looked interesting. But PMG Signature DAC to replace Mk2 is an option too (I still have trade in credit).

But it’s not on my priority list since I mainly listen to streaming like you now. I’m still looking into improving streaming more, and the new SW-10pro caught my eye.

Ever since upgrading my interconnect from MU2 to preamp, 99.8% of my listening has been streaming. I would have said 99.9%, but wanted to be accurate, lol

If that works hallelujah!!! :+1:t2: maybe
The MU2 paying dividends again!!

Good to see that Grimm are keeping customers updated. I’ll be really keen to get comments on the performance of the MU2 after this upgrade. Decisions coming up on where to go next!
Cheers

Is there a practical reason or SQ reason to run Roon core in a separate server? In my case that will be a computer that is not used for music purpose.

If I have to get a Nucelus to run it that does not make too much sense to me.

I currently have a subscription to Qobuz, which is connected to Roon on the MU2. I use Roon app on my smartphone connected to the MU2 for music selection and the MU2 page on my smartphone for volume level and source selection.
Will this change? Or are additional functions being added?

There are some people who seem to overthink things. They feel using the MU1 or MU2 as a Roon Endpoint is beneficial. Some do it simply because they have another server. Some because they have very large libraries.

My library is over 12TB. I have no problems. I have also tested both an MU1 and MU2 as a Roon Endpoint instead of a Roon Server. I could not detect any advantages to doing this. I don’t think it hurts anything to use it as an Endpoint.

I believe we have a few owners here who use them this way. If you try it both ways and find one better than the other go with either.

The future upgrade may finally allow use of the MU1 and MU2 without Roon.

I love Roon so…

Roon core in MU2 works just fine for me, and you saved my money on a rare occasion. Thanks Al!

Al saved someone money?

What did you do with a real Al?

Considering what you just purchased, I would not say “saved my money”, lol. Though your system will sound better than ever.

Referring to the MU2 being an all in one box I would guess is the money savings. Pre, Dac, streamer, Roon core all in one box. :+1:t2:

I was wondering if I need to put Roon core in another server such as a Roon Nucelus+ to get the best SQ, and Al told me to save the money. Although that was peanuts$ compares to any of his other suggestions.

When I had the Auralic G2 and the just got the Grimm MU1 I was using a M4 MacMini for my Roon Core. The comparison between the G2 and the MU1 using both as Roon endpoints was hard to tell which was better they were both equal IMO. When I switched the core to the MU1 that changed to give the MU1 the clear advantage! In my system the MU1 Roon core is the winner.

Roon is lacking SQ optimization in general so it’s great that vendors like Grimm provide solutions to that. Also the products sold by Roon like their Nucleus are just average/ok offerings.
So if one is willing to dig deeper they can achieve better performance by using HQPlayer and a cheap NAA renderer or stick to a pricey all-in-one solution like the Grimm.
