The Grimm MU2

I also felt some trepidation about cracking the case on the MU2. In the end, I’m glad that I did. It makes sense that the most important run of ethernet cable is between the switch and the streamer. So it also makes sense that the internal cable would be important, even though the case would give some protection from RF and other noise. Next cable upgrade will be between the switch and MU2. I’ll either go with the same KS to match the internal cable, or perhaps Shunyata Omega, as my PCs are Shunyata. Anyone have experience with these that would inform a recommendation? Currently using Audioquest Diamond.

Dear MU2 users, I’m addressing those who use an external preamplifier. Which of the three available fixed volume settings do you use with the external preamplifier?

-0db

-0dB

-0.6db as I recall. Heading out for golfing so l will confirm later.

-0.6db sounds good to me, but I have not tried other settings. I do not know if there’s any SQ difference if I set it at 0 or -3db. My system is down for a week so maybe someone can tell me if there’s a difference.

If you are feeding the MU2 DAC from the MU2 Streamer, 0dB is fine. I have mine set to -6dB and I don’t care one way or another.

Thanks, leaving for SFO in 15 minutes. But I’m sure I will not stay away from this place for 8 days:laughing:

So I am currently Grimmless. Using the Pink Faun, it has a Unix interface I love. When I want to see processor status, temp and utilization, I see this:

I like this sort of thing. It’s 99.25% idle yet it has a power supply to rival most amplifiers.

It seems nice.

Ah yes, I remember seeing it on a Gobekli Tepi T-pillar 11,000 yeara ago.

Being master of all rabbit holes, is it safe to say you’ve read all the signs before entering?

I moved the AM M2 fuse from DSMK2 into Grimm MU2 after I sold MK2. Today I found out MU2 requires a Fast blew 1A fuse, and the one inside now is a slow blew fuse.

I need to order a new one soon. Interestingly M2 fuse did not make much SQ difference and I do not know if it is because I put a wrong one in there.

I will probably try a Pink fuse this time to see if it will make a better improvement from MU2.

Call me crazy, but I really like the SQ of this setup. The main reason was actually to make MU2 more stable on the platform. With the big heavy brass cones before it was too easy moving around, and the heavy Stealth power cord does not help either. MU2 is so sensitive to movement that it would shutdown even when it barely moved. With this setup the unit is better secured on the platform.

The SQ with Stack AUVA100 is better than with Stack EQ 1 and Mapleshade Giant brass footers. The music flows with more energy and fullness, really nice :wine_glass: I didn’t even have any wine yet!

Another possibility is my new Orbi satellite is much quieter than my old one, but I doubt it since this is different kind of improvement from a blacker background.

The PMG streamer was just setup and I will hear it tomorrow to see if the same improvement will happen, and that will give me a better idea whether the satellite plays any role.

Not quite as full on as what Antipodes do where they literally get their boxes shipped back to them and put in new hardware - we are up for the Gen 5 upgrade on players first released in 2018, but I believe recent firmware upgrades for the Gimm family brough some welcome enhancements. I have had an eye on MU1 for a while that is locally up for sale ex-demo - but I think it is the DAC in the MU2 that makes it stand out. While the MU1 is an awesome streaming transport and music server it has limitations (by design) on what it will output and no I2S and no Grimm magic through its USB output - the Grimm magic is only for the SPDIF out - so I will stick with my Antipodes streaming / music server. Though if a MU2 came on the market at a good price I would be tempted - its interesting how many Audiophile reviewers (in Europe at least) now use them including John Darko and Hans B

With the AUVA100 footers under MU2, I like its sound better than yesterday, and MU2 easily sounded better than PMG streamer as a result. But again their setups are different. Not only one uses WIFI and the other uses hardwire, but also their noise isolation methods are different too. These components are sensitive to vibration, and noise isolation matters a lot and Stack AUVA footer reconfirmed it.

Therefore, I am not too surprised that I maybe the only one thinks MU2 sounds better than PMG streamer. It should be since more investment was put into MU2.

But I just put in a SR Pink fuse into MU2, the SQ has been downgraded instantly. Another breaking period has started. :man_facepalming:

Grimm has announced the PA1 amplifier coming soon.

Has anyone updated their MU2 to the latest Roon SW update, and if so, any glitches? Thanks; Tim

I have and everything is running smoothly.

Smooth…

Super smooth update. Change log here:
