Theoretica Applied Physics BACCH

,

I don’t know what that means.

It is a free vpn tunnel platform. It will connect your devices regardless of any router/isp configuration. It works well, it’s safe, and also an official solution from roon.

Just install it on your room server device, and the app on your mobile device and you are good to go.

Thanks. This might help me!

A couple of months ago when stratos was first out, someone mentioned that they had helicopters landing in their listening area!

Sounds wonderful. Could you please advise what are the xtc numbers? I cannot get anything behind or above. Edgar had advised I need to get up from 5-6 XTC levels to get the full surround. Since the the numbers have gradually increased and are currently around 9.5 but still nothing from behind or back. Chat GPT advises a minimum of 20 needed but on the BACCH page the implication is one would need at least 8.

Any guidance appreciated.

Any help appreciated

I ordered it on January 12, 2026. I bought the B4M and SP version.
I still haven’t had my Edgar call. So no help from me.

It embarrasses me, but I programmed Roon to convert any and all DSD to 24.96 PCM and I gotta say, that was easy. It sounds fine. I have so much DSD it would be sad to not listen to it.

Looks like Roon takes DSD64 down to 88K, which is easy as both are in the 44K family. I take it you run BACCH at 96K. So there would be a small upscaling across families (from 44K to 48K family) that follows. Two easy steps instead of one more difficult downscaling step (direct to 96K).

With Roon you can set by original file bitrate. I did multiples of 44.1 and 48 separately, so none of the evil stuff happens. 48 to to 96 and 44.1 to 88.2. I limit everything to 24.96.
I guess I was unaware about the upsampling. Probably another button I didn’t see. I’ll work on that.

Oh, before I get justifiably called out on it, last night I tried crossfading just for giggles. I don’t believe it actually worked.

I did have some 24.96 Qobuz files reliably quit 15 seconds in. Played one three times and 15 to 22 seconds in they quit. Qobuz still sucks, sadly.

Is this because of diffuculty scheduling? Am considering B4M but would def need a call with Edgar to set it up in my system… so hoping the queue isn’t 6mos long

He takes care of everyone but me quickly.

I didn’t have an appointment after a 4 weeks wait, so contacted Theoretica. Edgar did the install and walkthrough within two days after.
I sure would contact them!

Checkout asks for a discount code… anyone ever get one? First responder discount?

You actively let Roon do the downsampling? What’s the Bacch sync setting: also 96k? I thought Roon did this automatically by rendering to the Bacch threshold frequency.

Did you experiment with e.g. a 192k sync?

The BACCH devices take in digital signals and turn them into analog. Then the Digital Signal Processing takes place and the sound goes out to the DAC. Giving the input a higher than 24/96 signal requires way more computational power. The reward for adding this extra work is judged not worthy of the extra work required.

Before you get BACCH you think "I’m going to buy all DSD512 files and nothing less than 24/192 in PCM. That is how we all think/thought. But Edgar has demonstrated clearly to me that with his processing, anything more than a 24/96 signal brings zero reward. If you are going to go with BACCH, the sooner you accept this the better.

YES, I choose to let ROON, that awful program do this for me. There are other alternatives but to my ears, none of it matters.

BACCH cannot process DSD in its normal form as it is one bit. You can’t make changes to a one bit signal. So trying to play DSD as DSD, you run into all sorts of weird problems. I have an enormous DSD Library. I don’t fret it. Not one tiny bit. This goes counter to everything I believed pre-BACCH. I am over it.

Up until January 15, 2026 there was a 50% Discount. Perhaps some resellers offer a discount? I don’t know.

Though that was just the existing customer discount on the Stratos element. And folks who got it really early on, got an earlier version that needed replacing a month later.

@Hoku After his day job as a rocket scientist and then this job, Edgar does have much time for running Black Friday promotions etc. He cannot service that many orders at once anyway. So, no, it is not like waiting for a deal from Dirac at the holidays.

Do you know which level you would like to buy at first? You do not need to go full Stratos at first. I would go at least straight to Audiophile ORC though. I took the step-by-step route. I wound up with everything in the end anyway… This has been a fairly common theme here…

Does not hurt to ask for a full package with Stratos at intro price though…

Indeed, I had the privilege to discuss this with Thomas_Stockham in the mid-eighties. He may have had a mainframe in his basement back then, or maybe it was a corporate mini-computer. He was also serious about sound quality and he expressed that 16-44 was chosen not so that Beethoven’s 9th fit on a small disc, which was the rumour at the time as CDs came out. That is what I asked him about. He clarified that both the D-to-A maths and the blind testing had been done to check what people can hear and what they cannot just based on what the source digital data is that then gets processed by the downstream digital and analog systems… where there can be differences… as BACCH fans know!

Am thinking Audiophile to start… and from there we’ll see what’s next

Aubrey,

XTC Left 11.5 / Right 13

Watching and Listening to uncompressed Blu-Ray and especially Kaleidescape movies really makes Stratos shine.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Thanks Steve. This means i need to put more work into it. There is hope.

Best wishes
