Rambling text alert:
So in the mid seventies I was an avid short wave listener.
Short Wave is a in a poor state now, covered in EMI from networking gear (especially powerline ethernet!!) but then it was still very busy, both in the amateur bands and the commercial broadcast bands.
I started with old transistor radios hacked to shift them up the frequency band to 160 and 80 and 75 metres. Then moved on to the Army surplus sets that were still around then - Wireless No. 19 sets, and a lovely old Marconi CR100 Mod 8.
And of course the old Russian over-the-horizon radar system known as Woody Woodpecker would blat across the bands sometimes too.
One particularly evocative audio thing that brings that right back is hearing the
old musical station idents, many of which were on auto-chimer type machines (a bit like Ice Cream Van chimes).
I’ve heard them used by the Orb, and of course they turn up at the start of the signature tune on this album “Spirit of the Age” and they always send a bit of a shiver down the spine…
Robert Calvert is at his absolute best on this album too - highly recommended - I actually think the best song on the album is Damnation Alley - Calvert is at his lyrical and singy best here
