From a 1964 Decca 4-track tape. Luscious.
HDTT’s liner notes say it all: “Taken as a whole, this recording stands out not only for Maazel’s disciplined, architectural reading and the Vienna Philharmonic’s refined execution, but also for the quality of Decca’s sound. Performance and production work in harmony, resulting in a Sibelius Second that remains deeply satisfying both musically and sonically, and that continues to hold a secure place in the work’s recorded legacy.”
This 2xHD album was released earlier in 2025 and I’m a bit late getting around to listening to it, but it is phenomenal and well worthy of the recognition it’s been receiving.
René Laflamme has been doing some great remastering work recently. Have you been listening to any of his 2xHD releases over the years? They’ve gotten better and better. Original recording from 2001 in 88.2kHz 24-bit, so not a shabby starting point, of course. But this release is phenomenal after going through the remastering.
Peter Green’s songs, Gregor Hilden’s hands — warm valves, honest strings, and that quiet space where the blues really lives.
“The Golden Horn of Billy Franklin” Grand Prix Series mono LP
It’s not Billy Franklin. It’s Don Goldie. Very much in the mould of the Teagarden group he was then a part of. Really nice sound as well.
BTW, great sounding recording. The fiddle player was a big deal session player his whole life. This was recorded in 94 when he was 80..great stuff all around.
