Album One of three of this box set, others two to follow.

Preparing hundreds of discs for another trip to Half Price Books is tiring and sad work. Listening to “Bud Powell Live at the Essen Jazz Festival” Black Lion cd

I’ve recently been through that process, was quite an effort, but the reward afterwards was well worth it.

Hope it goes smoothly.

I really want to keep all these discs. It’s a ton of work, thousands to go through, many of which are two cds in a double cd case, and need to be separated into two single jewel case cds. The only reward I see is. . . placating my wife, briefly.

Ah yes, when it’s to appease the SO, that’s a slightly different matter, mine was a voluntary purge.

Good luck with it.

Music for a rainy sort of melancholy day.

“Flutes and Reeds” Savoy LP

Alto Saxophone – Ernie Wilkins
Bass – Eddie Jones
Drums – Kenny Clarke
Engineer, Recorded By – Rudy Van Gelder
Piano – Hank Jones
Tenor Saxophone, Flute – Frank Wess, Jerome Richardson

Recorded August 2, 1955 at Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ, recorded not long before I was born. Those drapes on the cover show you where it was recorded. . . .

Django Reinhardt - dial 214

I got two new Sam Records releases today - new pressings of two 1947 Django recordings. They are cleaned transfers from various copies of the original shellac LPs pulling the best copies of each track. Sound quality is surprisingly good considering the source. The covers are screen printed and absolutely gorgeous in person.

Made sense to play this one next. A cd this time, in the Savoy/Denon series of excellent sounding cds.

“Opus de Jazz”

This cd edition gives me two color covers; here’s the other:

Bass – Eddie Jones
Drums – Kenny Clarke
Flute – Frank Wess
Piano – Hank Jones
Tenor Saxophone – Frank Wess
Vibraphone – Milt Jackson

Recorded in October 28, 1955

Django Reinhardt - dial 218

And the second disc

Buster Bailey “1925-1940” Chronogical Classics cd

I always skip the first two tracks–they are from terribly worn 78s. Really nice music after that though!

Stephane Grappelli & David Grisman - Live

Only felt right to play some Stephane after the Django

Etta James - At Last

I believe T-Bone produced this album.
