A tip for everyone who’s open at all for Hip Hop style music and selective as I am and not offended by or not understanding every word anyway as me.

Those two albums are better than the mass.

And for everyone who likes Sibelius, a musically dynamic interpretation I like…

@jazznut - thanks for sharing Snorre Kirk “Beat”; a very well produced album

Playing it right now. On the 2nd track and loving it so far. Thanks for posting.

This is a fantastic set mastered from the original tape to a stunning quality and also available in HD download at a much more modest price - here

Agreed, this entire set of symphonies is superb.

Thanks for pointing to it! Their Bill Evans recording was available in various formats from various audiophile labels and great mastering engineers before/in parallel. I’ll check the digital versions against each other to decide about buying the vinyl also of the Evans and Monk (the latter I didn’t find reissued otherwise so far).

The diavalet vinyl albums are extremely expensive and unlike the above mentioned Bill Evans equivalents, not kept in the analog domain, but done from hires digital as mentioned here:

I’m willing to believe they got the masters to France, as they are reissuing just european concerts. And the seem to take great care, claiming their lacquers sound better than the master itself?!

So the vinyl‘s still interesting.

If you enjoy Vaughan Williams ‘Variations on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’ (which appears as the first track) you will probably enjoy this album.

I have the two cd set of the Monk, very nice. (Bought it via amazon.de).

Alexander Zemlinsky: The Birthday of the Infanta (1922)

Been listening to this a lot lately. Perfect after a night out with several old Air Force friends. It was a relatively tame affair, the wives kept our old impulses in check (plus we’re not in our 30s anymore). So many good people I’ve met during my lengthy service. I would do it again in a millisecond.

I’m sure I got this from bootzilla…wow. This is what I’m talking about. Why can’t everything be recorded like this. I see there’s MFSL LP and gold CD versions. Not sure this needs the delux treatment. A great sounding and rocking CD. Sublime!

Heard “Grandma’s Hands” while streaming WWOZ at work and saw that lonson posted this. What’s not to like (other than the hyper modern sound - and this one’s not too bad)? “Grandma’s Hands” will give you goosebumps BTW.

Re-listening to disc 14 of the Collector’s Edition of “1965-1966: The Cutting Edge” box set of Bob Dylan masterpieces in the rough. Wonderfully interesting takes of “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Low Lands” and “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.”

I love they way they consistently mixed this set . . . very modern sounding with a narrower stereo soundscape but real clarity without sacrificing heft and punch. And the development of these songs take by take is a fascinating listen.

For those who are still interested in the Diavalet recordings experiences, here a little personal review:

Today I bought the hires album of Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy, Monk and Bill Evans to compare the Bill Evans to the various other remasterings available and decide to buy expensive Diavalet vinyl or not.

So first my Bill Evans experience:
I compared it to the Resonance Records 16bit album (normal Resonance mastering), the Resonance Records LP (Grundman mastering), and the 2xHD Hires album. The Diavalet is clearly the worst one, having a narrowed stereo panning, less ambience space around instruments and is quite thin sounding with a little bit too loud treble in comparison. The Resonance 16bit album is clearly better in soundstage and tonality and imo the best of the bunch. The Resonance LP is a little better than the 16bit in ambience and richness but worse in attack and a little too recessed on top end, which is a very unusual Grundman mastering as he usually does the opposite. Top end between both Resonace versions would be optimal. The 2xHD hires is better than the Diavalet but not as good as the two Resonance versions.

So I will definitely not buy the Bill Evans Diavalet vinyl. Possibly they used an inferior souce tape.

All other Diavalet recordings I bought on hires are better sounding than the Bill Evans. The Sarah Vaughan is musically and soundwise nothing you have to own, but nice to have in addition for Vaughan fans.

The Monk is musically really interesting as it offers quite different versions of well known tracks and it really sounds good. I think Diavelet doesn’t get the top end really great and resolving with enough tonal colors and also here it is just a little bit too forward, but all in all really great dynamic and otherwise rich enough sound quality! It’s complaining on a high level.

My special recommendation is the Dizzy. It sounds even better than the Monk, really dynamic, regarding tonal colors still not as good as other US remasterings but nothing to complain about, and the music is really great, I didn’t expect that. Manteca comes like a late Miles fusion piece played with acoustic instruments
Highly recommended and possibly I try the vinyl of that. If it does clearly better (I doubt it) inspite of coming from hires, too , then I might also buy the Monk vinyl.

By the way:
Resonace is accusing Diavalet to not have had the licenses for the Bill Evans album, they claim it’s a “bootleg”.

Glad you like it (I had a feeling you would)!

I bought the Dizzie as I thought it musically interesting, the Monk as I consider him amongst the greatest musicians of the 20th century and it kept me up to 5 in the morning (and we had to leave home at 11:30 for a 3 1/2 hour matinee. I also bought the Gilels as he gave the greatest performance I ever heard. The Ella was a punt, but it’s very enjoyable and I couldn’t stream Ella.
