Probably my favorite Manfred but I’m a Chailly super-fan.
Jurowski’s with the LPO is a close second for me.
Some wonderful new albums have been gracing my listening room these past several weeks, and full reviews have finally been published. You’ve seen all of them in past “What are your spinning now?” posts and occasionally here. Most are classical, but several are jazz.
I got those on LP when I was in college. I carted them around with me from one HiFi shop to another, auditioning my first really good system (usually with the opening moments of the 6th).
I’ll have to look into that one. I’ve been chasing Manfred recordings for years. I’ve got Pletnev with the Russian National Orchestra and Petrenko with the Royal Liverpool, but I always come back to this old Chailly recording.
One of the few Beethoven symphony cycles I don’t own (a joke, sort of), I tagged this one some time ago as a “favorite” on Qobuz, so I could come back and give it a listen. I’ve just heard the 1st Symphony, and I have to say it was very nicely done. For a “period” treatment, it’s not lacking at all in dynamics or low-frequency percussive drive. Far too many original instruments performances seem a bit washed out to me. Not this one.
