Will SQ Improve with BHK PRE

Of course he’s going to buy it. Hopefully he will enjoy whatever it does.

I suppose cables become an issue in these multiple gain stages?

I still think Paul nailed the issue in his video.

I have a BHK Preamp feeding a pair of M1200’s and love this combination. Very dynamic, has some tube magic, and is very clean.

… Or if powering your house with a Tesla battery will improve SQ.

We need Al (@aangen) to try this “tweak” and report back to us on it.

I cannot agree with you more. I have only 100 hr on BHK but I get a wow moment every time I listen to music.

I missed it, what tweak? I haven’t been reading this thread as I have no interest in improving sound quality.

I was referring to @vkennedy61’s retort above:

Heal up fast, Al.

OK enjoying the pre-amp with edcor and external PSU all at the same time…

I need more time to see what SQ pre-amp brings to the table.

I have few questions:

  1. I have set PS DAC Sr volume at 100 (max) and only controlling volume in pre bhk. Is this right approach to get best SQ?

  2. I’m using stock XLR to connect pre bhk to PS DAC Sr. What have you guys noticed with upgrading this to a quality brand like Iconoclast?

  3. If I have to do.fuse upgrade at some point, which fuse shd I buy?

There is a whole thread devoted to this somewhere. That said, let me give you what I believe is the consensus bottom line (there are a couple of outliers but this seems to be preferred by most, if not all, of the vocal folks here):

First, set the DSD DAC volume on the non-attenuated gain setting and turn the volume to 92.

Next, play around with the preamp-volume on a song-by-song basis until you find a sweet spot that works for most tracks, plus or minus a few clicks.

Once you have a good feel for how that sounds at your normal listening levels for a while, start fiddling with the DAC volume while leaving the BHK volume fixed at your normal level, plus or minus a few clicks.

Many have found that they tend to settle in with the DAC set somewhere b/t 85 and 95, if I recall correctly. I don’t own a BHK pre-amp so my advice is being offered from a vicariousl perspective.

That said, I have settled on leaving the DSD volume set at 92 and I control the volume via my Anthem AVM 50v2 Pre/Pro.

FWIW.

Thanks @scotte1 (as always)

Non atunuated gain meaning set Dac Level to L?

That’s my understanding.

I hope some others join in and share their experiences and preferences.

Cheers.
