Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Not much on soap operas. The sound was akin to sand in a gear box.

Nice feet, baby.
It’s a wonderment. Everything sounds better. Really better. Even Steve, who is running the salt spreader on the driveway asked me what I changed in my stereo.

Hi Ron, How do you like the AP Bach Starker box set? Thanks in advance.

Congrats, Ron. Is it the angle of the photo? It looks like there some heavy tiltage going on.

It’s the angle of the dangle. No tiltosity

Bought a gently used DS Sr. w/ JK Richard’s analogue power supply and EDCOR transformers installed from a fellow forum denizen:

My unmodified, silver DS Sr. DAC will be available for sale or trade shortly, along with a never installed JK Richards analogue power supply card.

If you like a good cello, it’s wonderful.

Thanks for the complement. The R2R is still in very good operational condition, and it still looks almost new except for a rub mark on the capstan cover lettering. The wood cover is mint because it was kept in the box, which I still have , and the reel was mounted in a Teac reel rack.

I still have one blank and two partially recorded Maxell 35-180 tapes that I purchased in the early 80’s. I also have two blank RMG International Studio Master tapes and one blank Quantegy 407 Audio Master tape that I’ll use at some point.

I picked up the LTA preamp today. After a couple of hours of streaming, my initial thoughts are the LTA has a more delicate sound and I can hear more of the music, i.e., the LTA has better instrument separation; there’s a little more detail; and less tube hiss coming from the tweeter. Bass and midrange are about the same, the LTA highs have a nice sparkle to them. Over the weekend, I plan to play some vinyl albums, listen to some of my pre-recorded tapes, and record an album or two.

I have a Mk II and also a Mk I like yours, with the Richards power board and the Edcor transformers. I use a Farad Super3 for the power board with a custom cable. Sounds great! Congrats.

Got my SR Galileo Discovery phono cables today. Compared with my Zavfino Gold Rush, it’s not really in the ball park! The Galileo made my Gold Rush sounded broken is the best I can describe it. I didn’t know you can lose so much music in a phono cable, but I guess you can when the signal is so small and fragile. Anyway, richer, more body, more separation and solidity, bigger sound, much more real, you name it, this Galileo has got it. I never heard a cable made so much difference. If you want the best sound possible from your turntable, get a really good phono cable, it’s that important.

Thank you.

The DS Sr. is incrementally “better” with the EDCOR Transformers and the analogue power board. I am using a Small Green Computer 12V LPS with some nondescript power cable.

I am afraid to ask, does the LPS and its cable have the capability to make a major difference in the sound as well? :astonished:

The 9v power cable fom the LPS definitely makes a significant difference to the sound. I have a copper and a silver cable for my Farad and the silver one was a bit on the brighter side, although a little more detail than the copper one, but the copper is more forgiving and fuller sounding which I prefered and used, but I bought both.

I am sad that phono cables effect the sound as much as they do. My phono cable was five figures.

I finally did it. It took longer than expected. I made the crossover connection points with silver wire and re-soldered all the soldering points with silver solder. Replaced a few more capacitors with higher quality ones. When I was assembling the crossover, I came across a couple of stick-on rubber feet in one of my drawers. I stuck them on the coils and large capacitors in the hope that they would calm them down a bit and suppress vibrations. The first few notes were very promising. I’m curious what it sounds like after several hours. I replaced a simple capacitor parallel to the midrange drivers with a combination of Mundorf EVO Silver Gold Oil and Supreme. In the treble, the silver gold capacitor has a small Duelund JDM silver capacitor as a bypass. The small copper capacitor that bridges the resistance on the voltage divider from around 20,000 Hz has a small Mundorf silver gold and a duelund silver for support. The duelund JDM capacitor is highly recommended as a bypass. It makes a high quality capacitor even better. More fine details and spatial information. Even more natural. The ultra resistors. no longer seem to suppress anything from the incoming signal. The effort seems to have been worth it and after almost 5 days of effort I’m happy that everything works. Here are a few pictures of the crossovers for the treble and midrange. There is a separate crossover for the bass with a huge air copper tape coil and MKP capacitors installed in the base.

Nice! What did it replace? This is on my list for the next upgrade.

Mainly I wanted to replace the voltage divider resistors with Mundorf Ultra resistors. Then replaced a few capacitors and all solder joints with silver-gold solder and connections with solid silver wire.

Here is a page that is very interesting for those who are interested in capacitors and their sound characteristics.

I would say yes. I tried the silver and the copper Farad cables, and the custom one sent when I bought sounded best. The power cable to the power supply matters more in my experience. I ended up using the PS Audio AC-12 I use throughout the system after trying a half a dozen.
