Retired metrologist and astronautical engineer. My first system was a Dynaco SCA80Q amplifier that I built from kit, a Dual 1214 turntable and ESS AMT 5 bookshelf speakers. At that time I believed, and still do, the weakest points of a basic system were the phonograph cartridge and the loudspeaker because that is where the music energy changes forms. e.g.: from mechanical to electrical and back to mechanical. I used to lump digital music in with analog music in this regard. However, Paul convinced me that the change from analog to digital and back to analog is almost as significant as mechanical to analog back to mechanical.
