I grew up in and around music. My father’s family have been musicians for many generations. Six of my parents’ eight kids grew up playing an instrument. Four of us five boys are trumpet players. I wish my parents had not given up on piano lessons for my three sisters because of children’s innate stubbornness and had me learn piano. I was a very good trumpet player and could have been great with proper training, but unless you’re a professional musician, it’s easier to keep playing piano - or guitar, or voice - after high school or college. My marriages (two) have both been to musicians. My first wife continues to try to make my life hell, but she was a voice major and music teacher and truly enjoys making music. My second (and last) wife has been a pianist since she was five, won an award from Van Cliburn when she was twelve, has a baby grand in our bedroom (while my Bach Stradivarius trumpet and father’s King Silvertone cornet sit in their cases in a closet), and plays music, not just the notes, like an angel - and looks like an angel, too. She has not only Golden Ears that are like a bat’s in sensitivity, but a Golden Brain because of training and decades of experience in creating music. My personal bio? Does it really matter? Army brat who grew up mostly in Germany, went to college at Columbia in NYC, med school in Galveston, became a medical nomad who has saved a lot of lives, made many others better, and have seen lots of people die. I like creating things, learning new things, using fine things that actually work, love science, engineering, photography, literature, art of all kinds…but my first love is music. I have grown to love combining arts, sciences, and minds - auditory, visual, and emotional responses to Life and creation of experiences.
