Apodizing filters can nuke some filtering artifacts from earlier in the processing chain.
Linear phase preserves the waveshape better than minimum phase.
Brickwall filters are better for large ensembles.
Slow roll off filters are sometimes preferred for small ensembles / solo voice…

Some of my friends who listen to mostly jazz prefer the slow rolloff linear phase filters. I prefer the linear phase brickwall style filter since I listen to a lot of orchestra music.

There’s no right or wrong. Just use the one(s) you like best in a given situation.


…and are usually designed by committee with numerous compromises as they need to be all things to many people. I would take what Ted does any day of a generic DAC chip!
