Another review of the DS DAC

It wasn’t really that bad. Now that I think back, there was an issue with the Dimmer function not working properly and there was a very slight audible hiss if you put your ear up to the tweeter (when not using a pre-amp) that isn’t there with the DSD Sr. (or, again if you’re using a pre-amp). I think the dimmer bug was fixed via a subsequent firmware change, not positive, but maybe someone else could confirm.

There were a few other “buggy” items that another person actually created a thread for a year or two ago. You might look for that.

I’d just like to point out this example of “distortion” is suuuuuuper fake if you look at the time scale and amplitude scale differences. For some reason the ps audio dac was seemingly measured for over an hour and then zoomed out (note the first column is 20m not 20u), the graph is also twice as tall for no apparent reason (600vs300).

Maybe he did measure something, but that graph is super worthless as a comparison to anything.

Edit: derp, realized it was nano then micro seconds so m wasn’t minute lol. So ignore the part about an hour, but the rest stands.

Crapping on PS Audio?
Why?

As a fellow Linn fan (LP12 back in the day) not hating on the company.
Both can be good.

Moved on from Linn analogue (now Rega p10) tried but didn’t get on with their early digital…but know personally ex Linn guys (factory and Dealers) who say current company isn’t the same ethos as it was back in Ivor’s day.

Not a benchmark,
Ivor was a bit of a lad. (I know)

H’anyway.
Suspect your a fellow Weegie so zero animosity coming from me fella,
just saying that guys like Paul McG, Ted and Bascom would have enjoyed a beer with Ivor and talked “good trouble” about Hifi.

Saying this as a guy who at a hifi show tripped alongside a well known name Hifi name you’d recognise.
Was a great night, you’d have like it.

I liked and still like DSD so much, I bought a second one last month knowing it’s approaching its end of life.

I also purchased another and did all the mods posted on the Modding topic including installing the Jensen transformers Ted recommended. Thanks Ted!
I had some audiophile friends over that brought there favorite DAC’s. Terminator Plus, Chord Dave, Holo MAY KTE and an inexpensive SMSL. Guess what everyone’s favorite ended up being? That’s right the DSD. Most of them purchased a used DSD and are having me do the upgrades. How do you measure that? We did double blind test with level matching through the same preamp and system. We used a DDC with multiple outputs to supply the digital music to the DAC’s. We listened to the music NOT spec’s.

PS Audio is the most transparent audio company that I have done business with. Ted is one of the most helpful and kindest person I have corresponded with on these forums.

Thanks PS Audio and Ted Smith!

when does that mod go up for sale!!!

Everything is custom made and installed. The transformer adapters and bracing were 3D designed and printed here.
I’m not selling this one!

Is that something you would consider doing for PS Audio forum members as well?

Yes however It may be cost prohibitive with shipping and labor involved.

Here is my DAC #2 with LL1948 Transformers with our adapter kit.
