Anyone using Paul's Maestro Music management system?

Anyone using Paul’s MaestroMusic.app? I’d be interested in knowing your thoughts.

Just started. Much the same look/feel as Roon. Kudos to Paul for recognizing what is good and works in Roon. Haven’t figured out yet how to access my Qobuz favorites selected in Roon, or all that detailed artist info which if absent would be a game changer and I will stick with Roon.

What’s stopping me, is another subscription. I’m trying to limit the number of subscriptions because I think it’s getting out of hand. At the moment I’m stuck with Apple Music because of the wishes of my wife and kids

Besides that, for serious listening I’m using physical media and streaming ripped CDs and SACDs from a Mac Mini running Audirvāna Origin. If Paul would release a version of Maestro with a lifetime licence that does what Audirvāna Origin does but better, then I would be very interested.

Thanks, and I don’t blame you for not wanting another subscription. We are doing a yearly…if that helps but probably not. Maestro sound quality so far, to my ears and the beta testers, really is noticeably better because of the way we do it compared to the others, including Audirvana and certainly Roon.

Maybe others can chime in.

The problem with lifetime is that what makes Maestro better is what costs money to use: it’s cloud based and I have to cover those costs on a monthly basis.

Thanks for giving Maestro a try. Your Qobuz playlists import easily and should be automatic but if not, go to menu->setting-> and there you’ll see a playlist refresh.

Haven’t done favorites. That sounds like a great idea I will implement. Standy by.

The artists info and links and meta data should be as rich as Roon but if not, drop me a note and we’ll get it to work even better. Sky’s the limit with me/Maestro and I am happy to work with any of you to make this the best music program in the world.

BTW, Ella Radio (and playlist creator) is amazing. Terri and I were digging in the garden this afternoon (it snowed here a day ago!) and she said, “tell that thing to play some upbeat music for gardening” which i did and was blown away at its choices. Really cool!

I just checked the Maestro site again an saw you’ve added a lot of new information. I’ve got two questions:

As I said, I currently stream my my ripped CDs and SACDs as ALAC and DSF files over USB To my Strata mk2 using Audirvāna on the Mac Mini server and the Audirvāna remote iOS app to control Audirvāna on the Mac Mini. Would such a setup also be possible with Maestro?

initially i thought I would also need a Qobuz to get all the meta data, am I to understand correctly that that is not the case?

A yearly €89 starts to sound interesting if I can do the same as with Audirvāna Origin + getting the available metadata :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m eager to try it once Maestro is released.

Roon lifetime so maybe an annual will be tolerable. My adoption will also depend on privacy controls.

If the platform is a deep and continuous data gathering AI entity, I may have reservations.

I sent Paul the request to try it, and his response was: “Thanks, Tim. I will be in touch!”

Never heard back from him.

I am outside looking in as well.

@paul, I’m wondering how integrating my NAS will work with the iOS (and iPadOS?) Maestro app.

  • Does Maestro require that I install its own UPnP server software on my NAS?
  • It sounds as though Maestro would replace JPlay on my Apple devices for UPnP and Qobuz integration. Is that correct?
  • How will I be able to access my NAS library from anywhere in the world with my residential network firewalled from the outside?

Thanks for any information!

I gave Maestro a try this weekend, and I am pleased it now has a native app for Apple Silicon :+1:

But, I believe I heard @Paul say that the app was mostly made with AI, and my experience is that it’s a little buggy. My two main issues are:

  • I only was able to use it with devices directly connected to my Mac, AirPlay included. But connection with AirPlay is very inconsistent; it skips constantly. Don’t know why, when I use AirPlay with, for example, Apple Music, it works correctly. Using a wired DAC works as expected.
  • Qobuz playlists skip songs (saying that it’s an issue with Qobuz), but then the current playing song and track information get out of sync. It’s telling me that it’s playing something, but I am hearing something else.

There is an option to add the IP address of my DAC. I don’t understand what is supposed to be there. Is it a Roon endpoint or what? Curious because if I set my streamer to be an endpoint and type its IP address, I can change the volume of the streamer but it refuses to play anything.

Ella’s Picks is an interesting concept, but I need more time experimenting to see if she can generate something of my liking. I’m looking forward to the mobile apps for that, since it’s a feature I believe will be more useful on my iPhone.

Other than that, I’ll keep playing with it while the free trial runs.

Where can I learn more about this. Don’t recall reading anything about this before…

TIA

I jumped in to try the trial version; however, it has trouble handling my 7TB local library. The error message keeps appearing: “Library temporarily unavailable — your library is large and took longer than expected to load. This usually resolves on the next attempt.”

So for now, I can only try Qobuz… the sound is definitely better than Roon.

For a test, I only added 1 album for local library, it scanned successfully but the Building your album library keeps pop up and ENRICHED showing “0” and PENDING still “12” for quite some time

After several hours, I still can’t manage my local library (which I mainly listen to). The error message keeps popping up: “library temporarily unavailable.” However, Qobuz definitely sounds excellent. Anyway, I may give up my trial.

If the beta users could share a bit more info, my use case relies heavily on my own music tags, and playing to a network renderer. Can it be done with maestro?

Playing to a network renderer is the main idea behind Maestro. As far as music tags, it respects your metadata if you’ve entered it and it has a very robust editing capability for local libraries.

Sorry about that Mitch. We’re still working on the local library issues and I apologize. If you want to work directly with me, paul @ psaudio.com I can help out. If not, maybe come back later once we get the bugs worked out. The better sound of Maestro is worth the hassle (I think - but then I am biased).

Thanks for trying it. If you do get a chance to play with Ella and her choices for radio or play list definitely let me know. Terri and I were enjoying her choices yesterday out on the patio and they put smiles on our faces. Definitely better than Spotify (which I despise).

I am not sure it’s an issue with Qobuz if it’s skipping. I would probably blame Maestro for now. Some buggy behavior.

The thing is I am working 7 days a week at bug fixing and making improvements as more people try it and give me feedback which I appreciate. I can fix many of the issues on the fly and suddenly it just works better.

AirPlay works but I haven’t put any time in with it. That’s because the main way to connect, if not direct via USB, is over the network. Using an AirLens, or streamer, that’s the main way it connects.

Give it a comparison to any other streamer software. I think you’re be surprised and delighted how much better it sounds. That’s one of the main reasons I built this is to finally solve the streaming/sound quality problems with Roon.
